    Goodies for Peds..

We have oxygen bears for blow-by. Alternatively, kids are usually fascinated by penlights. If you only have nitrile gloves, you can make balloons by tying the opening first, and then cut off a portion of the thumb and inflate it there.

    Foreign Language in EMS

The newest version of the Google Translate app (on Android - not sure about iPhone) will read out anything you type in the language you select. It can aso translate by listening to someone speak - if you can get a patient to speak clearly enough, it could be useful.

Any states besides NJ that only have hospital-based ALS?

Another issue I've seen is that the for-profit ALS services' competition with each other compromises patient care. I have heard of a few incidents when a BLS crew was told that no medics were available by the ALS dispatch center run by one ALS company, when another company's ALS unit was available.

Any states besides NJ that only have hospital-based ALS?

Just wondering which states besides NJ (if any) only have hospital-based ALS. I've found it to be a bit cumbersome having this restriction as it seems to reduce the availability of ALS and increase on scene times. Anyone have experience in NJ and another state as far as how this works/doesn't work?

    Psychiatric Ambulance

I just found out that a psychiatric facility in PA operates ambulances with specially trained EMTs for dealing with psych calls. Anyone know more about this or any similar services? Good idea or not? http://www.mces.org/pages/crisisint_ambulance.php

New Jersey new scope of practice

NJ is ***-backwards Even though the new standards technically went into place last year, there have been essentially no changes. Yes, the course teaches the expanded scope of practice, but from what I have seen, no EMS agencies have added aspirin, nitro, or any of the other new treatments to...

16 y/o EMT Alone in Rig

As others have said, NJ state law mandates that a 'provisional' EMT cannot fill a crew and must be under the supervision of another EMT at all times. However, due to loose ambulance licensing & regulation - specifically through the NJ First Aid Council as opposed to the state DOH - volley squads...

Questions about QRV for rescue squad.

My squad has one that can bring a backboarded pt. to the ambulance for off-road incidents. It also has various IC/MCI supplies (tags, tent, water bottles, etc.).

    "For Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps"

Since I first started hearing about the tragedy in Newtown on Friday, one thought I keep having is about how I would respond and how my volunteer agency would respond in a similar situation. Of course I hope that I, and everyone on this board, would be able to focus on the patients and deliver...

    In field amputations

NJ has 2-3 trauma surgeons on call in fly-car type vehicles that can be called to scenes for prehospital amputations. They also can perform blood transfusions. http://www.jems.com/article/major-incidents/monoc-program-brings-physicians-ems-call

    suicide response

I agree that EMS & LEOs don't always respond compassionately / competently to psychiatric emergences, especially suicides. However, as others stated, there's essentially zero chance of additional 'special' personell being utilized for these situations as you're suggesting. When someone calls 911...

Highest paid EMS Service in NJ?

Not sure about pay, but a fair number of first aid squads are hiring per diem EMTs to fill volunteer coverage gaps. PM me for a few Essex county area squads that are doing this.
