    IV Question

Have they discussed having a port implanted? It depends on what the IV's are for. Also, IVs can usually be left in place for 3 or 4 days, have they considered having a home health aide type of person come change the IV every few days?

    My mom is sick

I passed a stone with pretty much the same symptoms as you described. My mom has been having abdominal pain for a while... she had a gi series today, she had some polyps removed, and she has gastritis, so they gave her nexium basically.

    head injury

Skip the PCP, this should be covered under worker's comp - go straight to a neurologist. Don't waste time, get yourself the best treatment you can, and multiple opinions.

Have a copter, now must use it?

No pressure that I've noticed. In fact, many are hesitant to call the chopper because they don't want to look dumb if the flight medic doesn't think the patient is as bad as the ground crew thinks... It comes down to knowing the flight protocols and whether someone fits them. Or if you're a...

    Just a moment

You should hang out here more. We like to hand out that "warm fuzzy feeling" on a regular basis. Glad to hear you have things in perspective. I don't worry too much about you though, you have a good head on your shoulders, even if you are a little bit of a lunatic. ;)

    Dive school

As a dive instructor and a staunch advocate for NOT having a dive team in my departments, I couldn't agree more. :)

    The Balance

You have to set priorities with yourself. I'm super busy between work and EMS, but I have certain tv shows I ALWAYS watch or tape to watch later, and I have certain other things I do like getting my nails done. My fiance and I take little weekends whenever we can, and one of our favorite...

    Why a Paramedic?

Hey good for you! Don't worry about IV class, after a few sticks you get used to it... it didn't bother me much so people liked starting IVs on me... I even took a couple people's hands and helped guide the needle in, lol. I got into this because my Dad was always in the vollie fire...

    Come to Jesus Meeting

How old is this kid? And he's a basic, you're a medic, right? ie, you're medically in charge. End of story.

    About That

Theoretically, the two kids who said they were fine were "unfounded" patients. Someone probably called the ambulance because they saw a rollover, or those two kids, who were fine, called for their friend. If their friend wasn't hurt, they may not have called for an ambulance at all, probably...

When is it appropriate to call an ambulance?

My best advice for that is to sign up for the class at least every year, if it is available. The more you practice, the more it get stored in the back of the brain, and recall will be automatic when it is needed. When I was a lifeguard I took CPR every six months... I used to have several...

    AED In Schools?

Matt, The Louis Acampora Foundation (named for the student from my school district who died) has a free kit you can order to help start an AED program. Check out their website here: http://www.la12.org/ - they were EXTREMELY instrumental in establishing the NY AED in schools law (ie, they...

    AED In Schools?

My high school was the one that started petitioning for (and got) the law in NY requiring AEDs for any school that has sports teams, because one of our freshman died when he took a lacrosse ball to the chest - the doctors were pretty sure he could have been saved if he had been defibbed within...

    Need Help: Emergency Response Program

How is an emergency communicated amongst the response team? to the principal? to 911? What is the procedure in place now if something happens? Give us some more details, and maybe we can make suggestions on how to improve what's already in place.

    AED In Schools?

Any school that has organized sports teams - middle schools, high schools, colleges - should have at least 1 AED per facility where sports are played, and they should be accessible (on the field, in the gym, etc) during sporting events. All coaches should know how to use them.

When is it appropriate to call an ambulance?

I agree Firechic, I have taken many patients out to triage or even to chairs - the triage nurse signs for them and then they sit their butt down with the rest of the people who stubbed their toes. :)
