It looks like I may have to opportunity to get sent to dive school by the fire department after the first of the year. I am part of the civilian EMS that they started. (My class was the first civilian class hired, so we are the "guinea pigs".) Apparently, part of the firefighters' new contract is that any fulltime employee that is stationed at my house must be either a diver or certified in swift water rescue. Since we are fulltime employees, we fall under that requirement even though we aren't part of the union and working under the contract. (All of the general orders and SOGs apply to us, just as if we were firefighters.)

Typically, they wouldn't let us go to any of these classes until our probie year was up, but they are going to try and pull some strings to get me in early. So, hopefully I will be attending dive class at the first of the year. Whether or not my captain is able to get that done for me, I will be going to swift water class in June. Have I mentioned that I love my job?!?!?!?!

That sounds pretty cool... is there actually a dive team at your house?

looking at your location... paging usafmedic45/ditchdoctor

Yes, we have a dive team at my house. They average 4-6 operational dives a year, so not real busy. (At least that is what I have been told. I've only been here a couple months.) They do train quite a bit though.

Well glad you are stoked about being cold in the murky can't-see-your-hand dark feeling around the muck for decaying corpses and shell casings in polluted water full of sharp things and entangling lines. It's pretty fun.

Swift water is fun too...

I got my first taste of Swift-Water rescue last summer. I'm really thinking of joining the local water-rescue group because I've taken a liking to the technical rescue stuff.

As a dive instructor and a staunch advocate for NOT having a dive team in my departments, I couldn't agree more. :)

swift water rescue takes guts...anyone who will do it has my respect.
