Is there a scientific reason to "control" your breathing

Did you read the reply above yours? Gotshirtz mentions it's a good skill to develop during every day activities. Fire instructors likely want to emphasize focusing on it during everyday physical exertion so you're more used to it during later SCBA drills.

CPR: Alternative Techniques for Chest Compressions?

Yup. I had a Boxer's Fracture when I began paramedic school. I was unable to make a tight grip or do any kind of chest compressions for almost 4 months after the injury and didn't even try so as not to cause additional injury.

What cities have their EMS and Fire Departments separate?

Denver Boston Chicago (I think?) Pittsburgh Buffalo Charlotte Honolulu Many cities in Florida These were all off the top of my head in about ten seconds of trying. The options are endless, particularly if you include something nebulous like "medium cities." FD transport certainly isn't the...

    the 100% directionless thread

Man. Just worked a cardiac arrest where the elderly mother tried to roll her unresponsive daughter over for 20 minutes because she panicked, didn't remember to call 911/couldn't find the phone, and didn't want to wake her son in law up. Poor lady. Sometimes all the public education in the world...

I was dispatched to a woman with back pain earlier today. I groaned a little (maybe a lot) inwardly, because ALS Charlie level back pain calls always seem to be nonsense, and I don't even find myself medicating them a lot of the time. Wouldn't you know the poor patient suffers from Marfan's...

    Ideas for RSI eduction

Real, live (or dead in some cases) intubations on human beings with varying anatomy and physical characteristics matters much more than intubations on Fred the Head. Mannequin practice has its place, but it doesn't replace real intubations or skill competency check off by an expert in the OR...

    Ideas for RSI eduction

I don't think anyone would argue that ETI itself is the only important part of RSI. I think you'd be hard pressed to argue it isn't vital though. The best decision making processes, appropriate medication administration, and pre-oxygenation doesn't mean much if your successful first pass...

    ROSC intubation scenario

We do most of our RSIs in the back of the ambulance en route to the hospital. Granted, in every single RSI there are two paramedics in the back and one EMT, and every ambulance we work is an enormous boat like apparatus on a medium duty chassis, so we have tons of room. Most people here say...

    Ideas for RSI eduction

We've been trying desperately to get Ketamine added to our protocols here in Delaware. So far the state and county medical directors haven't bit. We continue to utilize Versed, Fentanyl, and vecuronium as our only options for post RSI sedation and paralysis. I think the fact that we haven't...

    Single Gas CO Meter

Evidently we use the BW Honeywell Gasalert Extreme Clip. Quite the mouthful... The newer version (nearly identical) is linked here. http://www.pksafety.com/bw-clip-2-year-single-gas-detector-co.html They're pretty cheap and work well for what we need. They alarm audibly, visually, and...

Please Tell Me What You Would've Done?

I would still wager something was wrong in their technique, equipment, or bias since they were told you were hypotensive. 52/20 in an adult is going to be pathological and symptomatic.

    Single Gas CO Meter

Very cool technology! If I'm understanding what I read correctly, does this device just allow one to increase ventilation rates while maintaining isocapnic CO2 levels? It would be a big change if this kind of therapy were readily accessible for areas without hyperbaric chambers.

    Foaming At The Mouth

I'm not certain I quite agree with this. Being comfortable and competent in airway management should mean one is capable of using a variety of tools, rescue devices, and adjuncts to manage a patient's airway as is appropriate for them. That doesn't mean I have to be comfortable or familiar with...
