    Swine flu

That is all we can do. Stay in good physical shape, use proper P.P.E. proper cleaning an sanitizing methods and let soap and water be your best friend. This will not be much different than other diseases we come in contact with on a regular basis. Let this be a reminder to us all to double check...

Should dispatchers tell callers how to give allergic reaction medication?

Speaking from a dispatchers point of view. As long as the EMDPRS is in place to allow us to advise on the use of prescribed Epi-Pens I think it should be allowed. The key would have to be emphasizing to the caller that the meds are being used on the patient they are prescribed for. Added to our...

    Thinking under pressure

One word. EDUCATION!! The better educated you are,and the more you stay on top of your skills, and knowledge the better they will serve you when the pressure is on. You will find that the longer you do this job the less the stress factor will come into play. The best answer I can give you is to...

    Extrication class

I have used TNT and really like them. We use Holmatro comparable in weight. But you need to use the old Hurst tools we had when I first started. The spreader weighed in at around 75 to 80 pounds. Love to do extrication classes. Great stress reducer.

police officer keeps man from dying relative

Did the driver make a mistake by running the red light? Yes. Did the officer make a mistake in the way he handled the incident? Yes. I am not arguing the fact that a violation took place, just the way the situation was handled. Was a citation warranted? From watching the video I would say the...

    Whats your take ???

One of the biggest problems I see with phone triage is that it can be virtually impossible at times to get the right information from the caller. Either they know the right phrases to use to get an ambulance there emergency traffic. Or they will make a call sound like a b.s. run until the medics...

    Our 111 (911) site!

Sounds like the EMDPRS system used by a lot of areas here in the US. Been around since about 1979 it has proven to be a very useful tool not only in helping to save lives but also to help prevent unneeded emergency responses. We use it and I feel that I can dispatch as Quickly and more...

A Great Prank You Can Play On Your Friends.

O.K. you got me. But we will see how many of the people I sent it to fall for it too. Thanks. If we can't laugh at ourselves then how good is our sense of humor?

In trouble with the doc!! 1st time in 19 yrs

Being a BLS truck you were limited as to what could be done. Sometimes in efforts to do something we can do more damage. Not being there I can not say for sure but it sounds like the child fighting to get away might have caused more injury to the leg than not doing anything would have. Again...

    piercings and tattoos

While I do have three tattoos they are all on my shoulder so not visible with my shirt on. I do not feel that visible tattoos are professional looking in any health care field. This is due to the fact that I have had some people comment on the fact they give the impression that the wearer does...

    Who is in charge?

Have you tried having a meeting with the heads of the various agencies to try to work out an arrangement before it is needed? Taking a little time now could save a lot of time or maybe even a life later.

What light do you carry on your belt?

I carry a 2-AAA pocket light from Underwater Kinetics. Gives off good light at close range plus also water-proof and shock resistant. Fits in your pocket and light weight.

    Who is in charge?

Luckily in my area this is a non-issue. EMS, fire, and rescue are separate entities with fire and rescue being largely volunteer. So far we have had no problems with the I'm in charge syndrome. We all seem to have the opinion that we are there for the patient not for the glory of the individual...

Cellphone to rescue after car rolls

Not only a good way to find patients, it can also make searches a whole lot easier. Last summer I used phase-2 technology to put a crew within 50 feet of two lost hikers.
