    PC Notifications

Ok, well, I’ll disable the notifications then. I used the reply to gauge if it’s worth me taking the time right then to come back to the site, or to just wait until my next visit when I’ve planned to send 15-30 minutes reading new threads. Your site, your rules, that’s fine. An idea: a paid...

Ugh, you broke something then. Removing functionality is not a good idea, and this is the first change you’ve made that I don’t like. What are you trying to do, bump up the number of ad impressions on the site? But don’t registered members not see ads? I just don’t see what you’re trying to gain...

    I can't stand being a paramedic.

I don’t get why people get so torqued about people replying on-topic to old threads. If a new reply goes off-topic, that’s bad. And yes, teedubbyaw and I have gone off-topic. See http://emtlife.com/threads/suggsted-addition-to-community-rules.38463/ for a discussion of posting on old posts.

    Quiet personality mixed with EMS

Experience helps. I’ve taken the Myers-Briggs test a few times, and every single time I’ve been 100% introverted. I’ve now been with my volunteer agency for one year, and i’m much more comfortable with my colleagues. Having finished my EMT last year helped also, as I’m more confident with what...

    First 24 hour shift.

Bring healthy snacks to munch on. Fruit, protein bars, trail mix. Don’t rely on cookies, coffee/caffeinated beverages, donuts, etc… for an energy boost. Bring a complete change of clothes (including socks and underwear) just in case your first patient bleeds or vomits all over you. Ask...

    Agency Facebook Pages

I was tasked with creating and running our Facebook page earlier this year. (Also a Twitter account). I’m still learning, but I was given a lot of latitude in using social media to represent our agency. http://www.facebook.com/cavespringrs and https://twitter.com/CaveSpringRS Right now, I do a...

Trouble getting BP cuffs on patients during rideout

It’s a little easier to auscultate the BP in a moving ambulance if you lift your feet off the floor. Try to place your feet up on the stretcher crossbars. It just takes practice. When you have time during a transport, practice on a patient even when you don’t really need to get their BP.

    Outrageous tuition?

In Virginia, my EMT-B class through my volunteer rescue squad was around $200. At the local college, tuition is around $400 for a summer class. Add about $100 for the textbook. Some programs don’t include testing fees (Virginia skills testing, NREMT).

    Now what?

I’d guess that to practice, you’d need to be affiliated with an agency of some sort, either as a volunteer or an employee. The agency may be a rescue squad, a hospital, or some other organization that would need to have AN EMT on hand. When I got certified in Virginia earlier this year, I was...

I successfully passed my EMT-Basic written/practical exam... but to what avail?

Congrats! Did you also pass the National Registry test? nremt.org? Is there a volunteer agency near you? Join up, that would get you some real world experience as well as the opportunity to practice your skills both WITH people (the people at your squad) and ON people (your patients). Good luck!

    Maryland/Northern VA paramedic jobs?

And don’t forget the traffic on Northern Virginia. You’ll want to minimize your commute. If there is ever any kind of incident (rain, snow, car crash, pretty sunset, rainbow) anywhere in the area, traffic goes to heck in a hurry.

    Patient care followup survey

I’m the PIO (Public Information Officer) for my volunteer agency. I’ve been tasked by the chief to look into the logistics of doing a followup survey/questionnnaire with our patients. I’m wondering if anyone out there is doing anything like that. I’m guessing it will be done via postal mail, but...

Please Review this New Tech for EMS/FIRE

So how is this better than MedicAlert? Or someone just getting their own customized bracelet linking to their own web site? I do like the GPS aspect. Does the email still get sent if the person accesses the info via the website instead of with an app?

    Life as a dispatcher?

I’m thinking about applying as a dispatcher at a local jurisdiction. I’m looking for any ideas on what the job is really like. It appears to be a 911 job, dispatching fire, rescue, police, water/sewer, and who knows who else. I’m currently an EMT at a volunteer agency in a different jurisdiction.

Future EMT with *LOTS* of questions

Definitely get your CPR for Rescuers certification, which is different from just CPR. CPR for Rescuers includes CPR, AED, choking, for both adults and pediatrics. Are there any volunteer rescue companies in your area? In my county, volunteering for rescue is separate from volunteering with...

    Volunteer service...

Before each shift we have an equipment checklist we have to go through. Most (all?) of the times on the checklist are the minimum requirements for the ambulance to be in service. Check with your state’s office of emergency management, or health department, or whoever oversees ambulance services...

New forum idea: Q&A with a member

Oh no, there are many more questions. I guess my time as a reporter/theatre reviewer/interviewer (one of my previous careers) came to the fore.
