Do you make a good patient?

I'm a horrible pt, very dumb and stubborn as a mule. Two Xmas's ago I t-boned a guy who failed to yield and drove myself to the ER in my mangled car. My c/c was neck px AND I have a hx of a C6 burst fx in 2006. PD rolled first on the scene, I had already triaged the driver of the other vehicle...

How often do random people talk to you/say thank you?

I've had everything from free food to a $20 tip that was forcibly put into my shirt pocket...but then I've also been flipped off by people on the sidewalk as we drove back to station... I will say however most people seem appreciative if now awed by any first responder.

How do you study for BLS exam?

Hi All, In a week I take the entrance exam for a private ambulance company. It's not a huge deal of a test, but I haven't taken a comprehensive test like this in a couple years. So I brought out my books, dusted them off and plan to spend a week brushing up. What study tips work for you...

Seattle/King County Fire and EMS politics.

Actually no. In all of King County BLS FD runs first. In reality ALS is called the minority of the time, and transports even less than that. ALS is almost always second-in. This isn't about BLS questioning ALS, it's about BLS (EMS) questioning fellow BLS (FD) about the often incorrect...

So how horrible are the EMT runs usually ?

Peds, gore, burns, eyes, DOA, bloated body in the sun, none of that really gets to me, at least not for long. What gets to me is the look on family members faces as someone they love suffers or dies.

Would you take a non-EMT job, but still relating to health?

I'm an ED Tech and have been for three years. It's gotten me a lot of exposure that I wouldn't have been able to get on the rigs. I still prefer the field though...

Seattle/King County Fire and EMS politics.

This may be a hot button topic, but it has bothered me enough to come out of hiding and post about it. I'm really hoping that there are some King Co EMT's and FF's here who can shed light on this. I am currently an ER technician but am seriously considering going back out into the field. I...

Whats your most "rewarding" experience in EMS?

17yo M who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He got stabbed in the chest, L 7th intercostal at the midaxillary. Tension pneumo. Then he got dragged through a broken car window. We found him bleeding out in his poor mother's lap after he dragged himself a block home. We were the first...

Relocating to Seattle from CA, Should I go medic or basic

If you get your medic you can work in Pierce County (forty minutes south of downtown). Rural Metro has the north PC contracts and are the primary ALS for several depts out there. If you go basic and work in King Co you will still get very sick patients. There just aren't enough medics in this...

    advice for a aspiring emt

King County Not to sound like a broken record, but like every else has said, DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOB. Now, as someone who moved from Seattle, to LA, and back to Seattle let me tell you that you will get infinitely better experience as an EMT-B in LA (IF you can get a 911 response company) than...

Are You Prepared or Just a Wacker?

Maybe a wacker? I carry a small jump bag in my car, BVM, dressings, airways, and BP Cuff/Scope. It's about a foot by a foot by a foot so it doesn't take up room. I'm used to rural WA too though (the peninsula), where the volunteers are given green dash lights and required to wear pagers at all...

    what does amr pay?

AMR Pay Is AMR medical authority down there? I know in Ventura County (AMR is med authority there) they pay big bucks for medics. A medic just came to LA Co FD and took a massive pay cut to do so, however LA Co FD medics earn quite a bit already.

Funny one liners you've said to overheard to a patient

These are great lol Drew the short end of the stick one day and got pulled out of the EMS system to back up one of our IFT cars for a lift-assist. Not too happy about it we found out that this pt was one of our own frequent fliers, 550lbs, and lived in a double-wide mobile home. The hospital...
