    Beginners’ Luck

First call ever was an overdose. Load unconscious teenager into ambulance and suddenly teenager was conscious and the walls were covered in colors... and they weren't pretty... Quickly got any qualms I might have EVER had about vomit out the way

    Remedies for chafing?

Compression shorts (spandex, Under Armour, etc) and baby powder/lotion.

    dealing with anxiety and stress

Just remember that if you find the EMS class stressful, you have yet to actually be in the field with real patients and serious problems. The hours are long and stressful and can lead to a quick burnout if you don't take care of yourself both mentally and physically. Just consider the situation...

    What made you join EMS?

Well, if the elastic-band pants, yellow shirts, big boots and equipment belt weren't enough to attract me.... :P Haha, the adrenaline rush, true feeling of family on my crew, and honestly, I just like being there for someone and helping in anyway I can. And the lights and sirens. Obviously.

    Things left behind.....

A neighboring squad once left one of their crewmates and we had to give them a ride back to their station... Guess they were a vital part of the crew lol

Dumbest thing you have been asked

A woman on my crew has a dog and because she lives 2 apartments down from the station, she will occasionally take it on a walk during our shift. One day I joined her and a car pulled over to ask "if we had found the missing person." As we looked at each other, confused, the driver proceeded to...

    You know your an EMT....

You're an EMT when... Meals are considered optional and if it can't be eaten one handed, it's not considered edible. You find the rocking motion and the screaming of the sirens soothing and can nap while your partner floors it to a call. Partial nudity is considered fully clothed. You pull...

    Don't you hate it when.....

When the patient who swears up and down that they don't feel nauseous all of a sudden says, "Hey, I don't-" and spews all over the front of your uniform and the equipment surrounding you because you hit a pothole. Really, I only asked you 20 times, the last being 2 minutes ago.

Funny one liners you've said to overheard to a patient

While cutting off a young male's jeans and boxers due to possible pelvis fracture- "Do you have to cut off my jeans?" "I'm sorry sir, I really am, but I have to be able to examine your pelvis." "But do you reallllllllly have to? Can't I just take them off?" (This is said between howls of pain...

EMT-B Practical Test in the Morning

The test really isn't hard, just think logically. What do you do when you first arrive on scene? Scene safety, BSI, etc. A lot of questions revolve around what order things are done, remember the basics always come first. Same applies to airway, trauma etc. Otherwise take a deep breath and...

what do you carry with you at work

On my person I carry, trauma sheers, 2 pens (yes, exact number :P ) extra set of gloves, pen light, stethoscope around neck, small pack of portable tissues, radio/pager and cell phone. Everything gets used and the ambulance is responsible for carrying the rest :)

Bagging with BVM while stretcher is in motion

No offense taken, you've made a valid point... Both patients in the scenarios were elderly females, they were very dainty and didn't weigh much at all. I'm fairly light as well, so weight wasn't an issue. My partner is also a very strong 6ft 3 male, who does most of the lifting on calls. I'll...

Bagging with BVM while stretcher is in motion

I've been to 2 scenarios while bagging patients and moving. 1- The patient has been intubated and that means a paramedic is with you and your crew. If you are riding an minimum of 2 people, that means 2 people push/guide the stretcher and the remaining one bags. I've bagged while the medic and...

    Counting Respirations

Some people are very obvious "belly breathers," in which case you can simply watch their abdomen rise and fall. This is the case with many of my patients, I can count respirations without needing to make contact. If the respirations aren't easily visible, I place the patients arm over their...
