Who wears glasses or contacts?

So a while back I took my DOT physical and failed due to my eyesight. So I went and got myself some shiny new glasses. My question is who wears contacts out in the field? The glasses aren't bad but I'd rather wear contacts so I don't have to deal with constantly changing glasses from Rx sunglasses to my regular glasses.

I can see well enough to do patient care without them but I'm required to wear them to drive by my service and by the DOT. It messes with my head and eyes to go from corrected to uncorrected constantly though.

I keep hearing how much of a PITA contacts are in the field due to dust and what not.

When working Perdiem day shifts I will often wear my contacts but at night I just wear my glasses.

My eyes get dry after a long day.

I have been wearing some type of corrective lenses since the First Grade :-\ Got hard contacts in 5th grade, but after 15 years my eyes just didn't like them any more. Started wearing soft contacts maybe 4 years ago, and have been pretty happy with them - much less painful when you get dust/eyelashes in there, and I can actually wear them while I sleep. Technically, I don't wear 24/7 contacts, but as long as I take them out at least every few days to clean them, I just have to deal with blinking a lot if I get a call at 0300. Much better than fumbling around for glasses, and like you said it makes wearing sunglasses much easier as well (plus I don't have to wear a special SCBA facepiece with the eyeglass inserts).

That's because you're standing to close to the engine exhaust.

have you considered LASIK or PRK? I'm sitting in the doctors office as I type this for my 2 month follow up after PRK, short term pain worth every cent IMHO.

Im 21 so no I really haven't considered it. I don't have a history of vision problems until recently so they wouldn't even consider it until my sight loss has 'stabilized'.

In the future yes it sounds like a great option, at the moment it isn't.

It really hasn't been an issue for me since, like you, I wear them only when I'm driving. I just leave them on the doghouse when we get to a call. Stuff really only starts to get fuzzy at about 50 feet out.

The only issue I've hit is them steaming up when i try to drink some really hot coffee

Four eyes here. I wear glasses. I've thought about laser eye surgery but have heard that it screws up ones night vision. I might get contacts though.

Sounds like we have very similar vision. I have the same problem with street signs and night time and hot coffee :rofl:

i have contacts that i can sleep in for up to 6 weeks at a time, however they start to get blurry after about 2 weeks, so i take them out, put them in solution for a day and then pop them back in and good as new, then change the contacts out at about a 1 month interval

Is it possible to have a prescription that's too weak for LASIK? I have a minor prescription but with an astigmatism. My opthamologist told me my prescription is too weak to have the procedure. Second opinion anyone?

I have glasses and pretty bad vision. Infact my vision is to the point where they say LASIK/PRK/other corrective forms will not work for me. I did contacts in highschool but HATED them.


My glasses have transitions lenses, so that covers the sunglasses part. Only downside is a humid / rainy day and having the patient be outside.

Thats what i hate about glasses. You go from ac to hot humid day and they fog up like a motha.

Not a candidate for LASIK. Here in rural Mississippi contacts are hard to keep dirt from bringing you to your knees in pain. So I stay with this helicopter crash proof, industrial strength version of the Hubble Space Program on my face.

Yes it's that bad. Couple that with my 4 speech impediments and I'm living proof God has a sense of humor.

I know the feeling all too well. I was the epitome of the definition of BCGs in bootcamp (birth control glasses). I still get random small kids coming up to me and going "Your eyes are big!"


Up until 5th grade, I couldn't say grill / girl and to this day I still say BBQ over 'grill'. And I live in Texas with a northerner accent / speed of speech. Yeah...

I'm in that situation. As of now it's too weak but since my vision has degenerated over the last two years they said its a possibility in the future.

I wear both as well. I usually just wear my contacts during the day and glasses at night. Sometimes if I wear my contacts at night I get the "halo" effect with them on lights. I also have terrible vision if your more then 2 feet away from me your just a blur. I need to save up some money so I can get Lasik.

Wear contacts and glasses, don't know what it's like to wake up and being able to see without sleeping with my glasses on or wearing my contacts. Saving up for Lasik.
