Why did you choose EMS?

hmm... I kind have always been interested in it (grew up watching rescue 911 :D ) But what really got my mind saying "this is what you want/are going to do" is when my town had an EMS Day when I was 16yo. They had fire, ems, water rescue, police, and had lifeflight land for a tour of the chopper. Instead of walking around and talking to police and fire... I found myself stuck on the ambulance. I talked with the paramedic and asked a lot of questions and just didn't want to leave haha... Well when I got home that night I searched on the net and called around about EMT programs and found out that my local ambulance service holds one every other year. The best part was that it would be free of cost to me as long as I volunteered for at least one year there. So took the EMT program during my senior year of high school and volunteered there for just under a year (still didn't have to pay :P )

After doing that I found out that there was no way I would leave this profession... so signed up for paramedic school and just finished that last summer.

And here I am...

Actually don't start school till Jan. I have been looking at the medical field for years. My dh became a ff and started telling me about calls, the emt part of his calls just fascinated me. I researched and have run third wheel on a ambulance ride and I am totally hooked. But I hate working at a desk from 9 to 5 also. I need to be out and about. The fact that you can help people is awesome.

I first joined the Fire dept. to be a part of something. I have friends who have been firefighters since they were in high school and for years I would here stories from them about fighting fires and also about just being involved in the fire dept. in general. I have to be honest, the excitement of fighting fire and the adrenaline rush is a big reason that I am a firefighter (nobody ever wants to admit this, yeah I want to help people also but enjoy the fight), I also enjoy the down time and just being around the fire house. Our dept. is a pretty close family where anyone would help out anyone else in need.

We are a part time (paid per call) dept. for a town of roughly 2500 people, and we provide EMS services also. We are a P/B system with a few medics and mostly basics. I got involved in the EMS side of things after being on the dept. for a while. I wanted to try and help people and learn a little bit more than just the first responder type stuff we do as firefighters. Unlike the fire side of things, doing shifts on the ambulance gives me the opportunity to help people in more of a direct way. I guess my motives are a little selfish, because it makes me feel good about myself to help someone in need. It also ties in pretty well with my full time job, I have been on job sites in the past where someone was injured and nobody knew what to do, now I do.

I am an electrician full time and unfortunately I don't think I will ever be able to stop doing that for a full time EMT gig. Basics in this area make about 1/3 of what I make as a licensed electrician.

got outta high school..went i wanna be a nurse but to see if i like medicine ill take my EMT....aced it, loved it, and now im in clinicals for my medic...I love this job and i couldnt see myself doing anything else.....also i like when we turn on those groovy flashy lights...lololol ;)

Saw the Corpsman at bootcamp and was like.. wow. After talking to another kid in my platoon, I thought it sounded good. I came home and signed up for the class, the rest is history....

It's in my blood and I've always wanted to be involved in EMS. Grew up watching Rescue 911 and other EMS related shows b/c that's what my mom liked to watch. If anyone askes its my brothers fault!!

I can say almost the same. I've always been interested since my dad has been a NREMT-B for many years. I grew up around it. I was at the fire station frequently when he worked with the city and I even got to go on some calls with him; there was a picture of me wearing his helmet while on a call that appeared in the newspaper when I was probably 5. I've always had a sense that I should be doing something to serve my fellow man. I'm a Christian. I believe that God has given me gifts, talents and abilities to use me to help people. Yes, I know that sounds really cliche but it's the simple truth.

Plus, honestly, I also think it's a cool career. Not only are you serving your community but you're involved in a sort of fraternity that not many people get to be a part of. There's got to be something special in that.
