I'm looking at Columbus State Community College right now for my medic education (getting a little ahead of myself before even having my EMT, I know), but I was wondering what electives you all think offer the skills you'll use most in the field. Here's a list of the ones I'd be eligible to take, and I can only choose one:

Intro to rescue
River rescue
Ice and cold water rescue
Search and Rescue (offers certificate)
Vertical rescue
12 Lead EKG and advanced Cardiac Treatment

I wanted to take critical care, but you need at least 3 years experience, so I'd probably go back after that time to get it. So, which skills do you think would be used more often? I was thinking 12 Lead would be pretty important, but I assumed (yes, I A$$-U-ME'd) that 12 Lead is covered in the core curriculum.

Thanks!

Paramedic school touches on 12L interpretation at best. I would suggest taking that course.

Mthom, I graduated with a fire/ems degree from Columbus State. I can give very specific info on these programs if you would like. If you email me, we could set up a time to talk by phone and I could give you more in-depth info. My email is [REMOVED].

I took a lot of those programs and know the instructors, etc. I can let you know which ones are good for departments around here and which instructors are better than others and about programs elsewhere that you can transfer back to the school.
