We all know that being in EMS isn't easy on a hungry stomach. What do you usually eat during your shift? More importantly, how fast can you scarf it down before getting a response? :)

Hmm, well, I work nights, so, I'm limited anyways.

I try to bring my own snacks, bad bad bad. But, I also tend to run into Denny's for a to-go salad at about 0200.

How fast can I scarf it? Pretty fast, I'm much faster now than I was before though.

And, I'm an obsessive chewer of Ice Breakers Ice Cubes Peppermint (thanks Maverick!!!!!)

I gave up a long time ago, I just have a feeding tube.:glare:

Liver and fava beans, with a nice chianti

I just eat at normal speed on the way to the call.

I just check the patients fridge and get whatever they have that I like and eat it on the way to the hospital.:P Just kidding.

Actually try to eat a salad or fruit. Sometimes cook a steak or pork chop. Try and avoid junk food.

Well it's fast and easy

Peanut butter and jelly on a whole grain bread, granola bars. These are easy to fix and cheap. I try VERY hard to stay away from fast food....... ( misses Macdonald's french fries!!! :P)

so how often do you guy get to actually finish a meal?
You know the rule the more expensive the meal the less likely you are to get to enjoy it.

I usually bring a bag of chips or pretzels and a few PB&J sandwiches for my shift but if we get a chance to stop I'll still buy food, that's just a good backup in case we don't have time to stop I can eat en route to a call.

I will have to preface this with my confession to being an old hippy vegetarian. Hand fruit, whatever's in season, apples, oranges, pears, bananas. I have to avoid the juicy ones since I got in trouble over a sticky steering wheel. I wasn't eating behind the wheel, but my hands were sticky when I got in the rig. Granola and yogurt are easy and quick. Gotta go with Anna on the PB&J on whole grain. Packs well, doesn't need to be warmed up and good anytime, day or night.

it's been peanut butter and jelly the past few days. My partner and I with dispatch just ordered out so it's chicken pad Thai right now.

Once, I actually got paid to eat at Chili's. That was an anomaly. I was covering a VERY slow IFT shift that night, in fact, the only excitement that shift was actually eating a real meal, in the restaurant.

mostly sandwiches from home
whole grain bread, lots of fruits, no snacks ok maybe except Haribo gummi bears
and if I have to eat fast foods Im trying to stick with JJ or subway

Whatever you do-don't get hooked on fast food. It's a fast track for your stomach to touch the steering wheel while you drive to the call and crack kills. (refereing to butt crack) Our hospitals usually have fresh fruit, juice, soda (try not to get hooked) but a good caffine kick at 2 am gets you going on a 72 hour shift. Pack your lunch, you will save money and have a get together with the other crews and decide to make a home cooked meal, like a crock pot meal, that if is cooks a bit, it's ok, get creative. To me, they were my family too.

Due to very limited IFT trucks at my old job, we were always busy slammed. Chik-Fil-A always gave us the LEO 50% discount. If we had time to stop and get out, i.e holding somewhere, we'd usually go there as we are all very poor EMTs. Rare we got to sit and eat, we usually ate while driveing to the next call.

If we were so busy we had to run down to the gas station before clearing a drop off, my lunch that day consisted of a big bag of skittles, redbull and mountain dew.

oh trust me, there were sooo many days you got to grab breakfast, which was an apple juice, donut or a banana, and that sometimes didn't happen till 10 or 11 pm

In one of the ER's here all the nurses pitch in and stock the fridge in the EMS lounge with sodas, cold sandwiches, bags of chips, usually some yogurt in there. Maybe it's a sad state but that hospital also happens to have much more unity between EMS and the ER. It's nice to get in there and grab a bite quick between calls since we rarely sit still long enough to find anything else.

Currently I take sandwiches or leftovers from home to work with me most days. I guess it's good practice for when I get into EMS. I'm also a big eater of fruit these days (in keeping with trying to get into better shape). Pear apples are a new favorite.

Just a word of warning, a lot of gum is sweetened with mannitol or sorbitol or something similar. Chew enough and you'll get the laxative affect of the sweetener!

When I was on my internship we often staged at a certain gas station chain and the service I was with had a pretty good relationship with them and they would let us come in and microwave our food, which opened up more possibilities for meals. I'm about the start my new job, and I haven't decided what I'm going to bring with me yet. I'm worrying really hard to loose weight and I need to be careful with what I bring so I'm thinking a lot of fruit, yogurt, mini wheats and left overs that are good cold.

Do you guys prefer to snack through your shift when you have time, or eat one set meal?
