Hey Everyone,

I'm a newbie to the EMS world, but I've been fortunate enough to have two great opportunities for work as an EMT-B with Beaumont Medical Transportation and Universal Macomb Ambulance. I'm ecstatic as both seem to be awesome places for me to start, but I would like to know if anyone already in the field (and area) has something they would like to add that might help me make the decision.

This how I see the two:
Beaumont
  • Slightly higher wage
  • Private EMS- I've been told this will be low intensity work
  • I would receive a stipend towards my schooling or to a paramedic programif I decide it is in the cards for me

Universal Macomb
  • Slightly lower wage per hour, with supposed regular raises
  • Will "work with me" to get my medic certification
  • It seems the company is contracted to provide EMS for the community, meaning I would get a mix of high and low priority calls

I've been putting a lot of thought into which is best for my situation, as I'm a full time student at a local university and am unsure as to exactly what I want to do once I have my degree.

Thanks in advance to anyone with any insight on this!

Honestly, I would never work for either of them. But If you had to choose, Beaumont has nicer everything. Uniforms, equipment, trucks, benefits. If I had to choose between the two it would be Beaumont all the way.

I have friends at Universal and it seems to be pretty shady. And the pay sucks.

Have you looked into Alliance or Star?

You can do so much better than 8bucks an hour for an EMT position. I am pretty sure that is what Universal offered me. Or 8.50 I think. Beaumont pays 10? And helps with school and is all transports. So it is pretty easy.

Even if you were to choose Universal for the priority calls, you wouldn't get to do anything. You would be the driver for the medic.

Star Ems does EMS for Pontiac and as a basic you get to go on all the 911 calls with ALS. The experience is priceless.

Also with all that said. I have never worked for either company. That is just my opinion based on what I have seen and heard.

Godfather worked for universal I think, so he may be able to give a little more insight then me.

Thanks I appreciate the reply. I wasn't too happy to hear 8.45/hour. I will look into Star as well, that sounds promising. Again, thank you.
