Wearing your stethoscope

yeah what most people said...i keep mine in cargo pants pocket when when not on scene then once i use it...keep it around my neck or next to me on the squad bench (for long transfers). Ive been told to always keep it on or next to you especially if you have people getting in and out of the truck (ie and extra FF/EMT or paramedics). Ive almost taken a medic's scope by accident b/c i forgot mine and then borrowed theirs and i just put it next to me. luckily i realized it when we got to the hospital so i could give it back. (I was still a student then).

cargo pants pocket when not in use. If i need it around the neck during the pt treatment/transport

Honestly, whether or not it's around your neck is a moot point--- if they want to grab something, they will grab something, whether it's a stethoscope, your collar, your undershirt, or just your neck.

Having said that, I don't wear my. No particular reason.

As a phlebotomist in the ER I seem to always get the crazy people. Through trial and error (and getting my clock cleaned a few times) I've learned to keep equipment, badges, ect... off my neck and preferably completely out of patient reach. I haven't worked on an ambulance yet, other than clinical hours (I just passed my test.) but I figure I will probably keep the same mentality. Afterall, they're the same patients, before they get the 5mg of Haldol. Besides, I like having a lot of pockets so that's where I will keep my stuff.

I've always folded mine in half then slipped the bight UP under my belt. Comes from yeras of USAF (around neck is /was against AFR 35-10 appearance etc) and twenty years in corrections. Never dropped it.

that's an interesting method- never heard of that way before!

We have two supplied with our First Response/Resusicitation Pack however I perfer my own.

It is generally worn around my neck.

Heres a fancy gadget to hold it for you.

While I don't like the ideal of someone choking me with my scope I also don't wear it around my neck so I don't catch their cooties. There's some nasty stuff that can get transferred from patient to your scope then to your neck. Odds are you do not wash your neck after each patient contact.

^^^ Those are pretty popular with the ER nurses I've noticed. I considered getting one but wearing anything on my belt drives me nuts. When I wear it I always make sure it's on the outside of my shirt, no skin to scope contact.

Those don't work on every scope type though. I know with one like my ultrascope they don't work

Mine stays round my neck.

Except when it's hidden in my back pocket whilst I'm smoking.
