I don't live in San Diego, but I assume you have paid fire departments there?

In the more rural areas you can join a volunteer fire department. Also, some ambulance services have volunteers or even in hospital ED's.

Another idea- If there is one particular service you are interested in, sign up for ride outs, as many as you can and the service will get to know you, hear good things from crew members and want to hire you.
Good Luck!

That sounds good.

I didnt know i could just go and ask for ride alongs.

We did one ride along during class but it was set up through the teacher.

We were required to schedule all of our own ride outs. When I was in school, if I wasn't working- I was riding. Learning from the medics and STUDYING!

Some services only allow one or two ride outs per person per year. But my particular service didn't. You will have to check into that.

Ok.............i will do that.

I wish we could have gone on more ride alongs. We got one ride and one clinical. It sure wasnt enough!

Before you capitulate to not finding a job, I would suggest you hit the bricks and get your resume out there. I heard the casinos are hiring, and don't forget places like Sea World, Lego Land and Wild Animal park. The SD County jail and Border patrol also employs EMS people. Just keep looking.

Some employers do not consider volunteering as experience. And others will not hire anyone that was a volunteer.

That's good to hear. Any services that you know of in particular that have this practice? And are they hiring? :p

Oh ya! That's right! My instructor said his first jobs were at the san diego zoo and dr office!

He did mention applying at resorts and we have so many here!

Not considering volunteering an experience - meh, I could see it, volunteers usually have lower call volume.
I'm wondering, though, if it's legal to reject an applicant because he has had volunteer experience in addition to paid.

ITS GONNA BE TOUGH IN SAN DIEGO...:sad:

PLUS, IM PROBABLY GONNA END UP BEING TOO OLD TO GET HIRED PRETTY SOON !

Regardless, how hard would it be to prove that that's the only reason a person was turned down...

I don't live in California, but I would assume there are smaller towns around San Diego that are volunteer. You should check out these communities. I'm sure they would welcome you with open arms. Small communities have a hard time staffing their ambulances 24 hours a day. Daytime hours are usually the worst.

If you are already certified and they don't have to pay to train you, you will be like gold to them. Go for it. You will get the experience, make some new friends, and they will get a competent set of hands that they no-doubt need.

That's a great list if you're looking to volunteer as a fire fighter. If you're looking to volunteer as an EMT, it's absolutely useless.

Some of the departments on the list require EMT cert, perhaps they run a first response service or even transport.

while the list is for FF, it gives him an idea on who to contact. Knew a couple of people who volunteered as EMT's in some of the rural areas.

Do not do jails/prison as a new grad!

It is demanding on many other levels and a technical/professonal backwater. AND other services may give you a subconscious black mark for it.
