Volunteer Availability Requirements

I've had a strong interest in getting my EMT-B certificate for awhile now and have been considering applying to be a volunteer at my local firehouse. (They would provide all required training and certificates.) My issue is that I work a job that requires me to work at least 40 hours a week and to be on-call 24 hours every other week. So my question Is; Is it possible to be a volunteer with such fragmented availability? This is something that I really want to pursue, but I'm not too sure what the requirements are for most volunteers. Have you ever heard of anybody working around this type of schedule? Or do you think it is even possible to complete training and certification around something like this?

It's certainly possible. Call the department itself and ask them what their availability/participation requirements are for membership.

My local FD requires 8 on calls a month plus training every Tuesday. I'm already on call a few times a month plus 1 weekend so that won't work. Unfortunately.

My old department when it was volunteer required 16 hours a month (class B) to unlimited (Class A Member). when they went combo (paid FT and PT) they required 24hours every 2 weeks (Class B) to 24-36 hours every week (Class A).

Depends on the department

Thank you for the replies! I will get in contact with my local department and hopefully they will be able to work something out. *fingers crossed!*

Not to be greedy, but I did have one more question that I'm hoping one of you might be able help me with. I'm trying to find a good list of all of the vaccinations that I need to get to go through the courses and I haven't quite found a clear one yet. I know that the Hep. B can take awhile so I figured it would be good to just get it out of the way before even starting. Do you know of any other ones that would be good to try and get early? Or do the required vaccinations tend to vary by department as well?

It all depends on the dept. My old dept required one 24 hour shift a month. Just ask the dept on the requirements.
