So, to find as many EMT job openings as I can, I usually check the direct companies' websites and also external sites like craigslist etc.

Sometimes I come across ambulance companies that I've never heard of, so I check them against the list provided by LA County EMS, under "LICENSED AMBULANCE/AMBULETTE PROVIDERS"

Turns out some of them are unlisted. What's going on with these companies? Are they illegally set-up, or what?

LA is weird. They have LA City ONLY ambulances for IFT and usually more established companies are LA COUNTY approved for IFT. Go to a LA county approved company.

If you list theses companies, they are n longer unlisted.

Till recently company's didn't need to have be licensed by LA County unless they wanted to work in uncorporated area. As such most company basically only had City of LA license and other surrounding cities. That have changed this year and those that want to work in LA County had to apply. However while their application is pending they can continue to work in LA County. The only company that got denied is Alpha Ambulance which from my understanding is no longer in business. So chances are the company that you see are all legal ambulance providers.

Thank you, TRSpeed and looker. Is there a way to differentiate companies that are waiting for their license versus illegal companies then? Is it a good idea to just be straightforward and ask them why they're unlisted after an interview?

I kinda agree with you, looker, that it's quite unlikely... but I don't want to be 6 months in before I find myself unknowingly involved in illegal practices.

In California all ambulances are licensed by CHP. I have a feeling you are looking at wrong place and think they are unlisted. See this link for the county.

I see. Oh, I was looking under http://ems.dhs.lacounty.gov/AmbulanceLicensing/Overnames.pdf

But thank you!

Edit: Oh... apparently there's "As of August 2011" where I'm looking too. Guess it was outdated.

What you are looking at is not outdated. That was the last time it was updated because that is the last time a company got licensed in LA County. The link I posted is pending company's that are permitted to work in LA county while their application's are pending.
