Hello all,

Looking for a little help here and will attempt to be as detailed as possible. I really need some advice.

I've been a paramedic for a year and have been in the field for 4. I've worked for the same private ambulance company (Dallas metroplex) my entire career until a few months ago when I decided to travel to Saipan to get some prehospital care/fire experience abroad. I recently returned several days ago.

I received a call from my old partner about 3 weeks ago. He told me we are being charged by a nearby FD for unlawful use of an ambulance. My old supervisor stated he would take care of this. In the meantime a super typhoon hit my island and have not have contact until yesterday. I will remain as objective as possible.

Upon heading back to our base in 5 o' clock traffic, at a major hwy intersection (7 lanes), we noticed a wrecked vehicle in the 2nd lane with a teenage male in the drivers side seat in pain. It appeared as the driver had rear ended another vehicle at high speed that evidently fled the scene. We parked in blocking fashion from the rear, lights on, attempting to block the #1 and #2 lanes, we contacted dispatch our situation and advised them to contact local FD. The Pt was in severe pain complaining of cervical back pain, no visible trauma. As many know this is a dangerous situation with two people and lack of resources. We decided to extricate the Pt via C-collar and KED. This was a time consuming effort, traffic continued around my rig in the #1 lane (gotta love dallas traffic). After loading the Pt I deemed the scene unsafe, traffic was out of control and 15 minutes had passed with no FD to be seen. I hit the flashers on the wrecked vehicle, and we transported the Pt to the nearest ER, all while, I give my word, remaining in solid contact with dispatch.

In the aftermath evidently the battalion chief was furious about the situation. While I understand his frustration what was I to do. I had assumed Pt care and couldn't do anything about the wrecked vehicle...ample time was given. I was told at work I did a great job and the situation would be hashed out.

Fast forward. My old company is giving my partner and I no legal representation (even though they billed the Pt!?). They say they'll pay the fine but won't fight it, end of story.

Do I fight this in a trial by jury. I know I wasn't perfect but I was really just trying to do the right thing. I'm a humble person with no ego and really love being a medic, I know politics dilute things sometimes but am trying to remain altruistic. Any advice?

Unfortunately, it sounds like you're asking for legal advice. This is something we can't do. I suggest that you first consult a lawyer about the appropriate legal specialist that is competent to represent you in this matter. Then consult that lawyer about the situation and, in consultation with that lawyer, determine the appropriate course/response in this matter. I am closing this thread at this point as others may chime in and inadvertently provide legal advice beyond their training.
