In the early morning hours of today, Sunday, a tornado ripped through my hometown. It actually went through three counties. Several deaths, numerous injuries.

It sucks being a thousand miles away.

You can watch live coverage here.

:(

So far at least 9 dead, at least 80 injured and at hospitals.

Live images are just horrible.

:(

Man Chimpie I'm so sorry to hear this! Were you able to get a hold of everyone you knew over there? If we can do anything, let us know.

Yeah, everyone I have talked to is okay.

15 dead... over 200 injured

Wow Chimp sorry to hear that but glad to hear that you everyone you have talked to is okay. I'll Secound wingnut in if we can help let us know.

I turned on the national news yesterday AM and saw it. I could hardly believe my eyes, and something told me that someone I knew either had loved ones in the area or from that area.

Chimp, if theres something you need, let us know.

This is horrible.

What is worse is that the numbers keep going up - it is now at 22 (per CNN).

It sounds like many folks had no warning, becuase either they didn't have a weather radio, or it wasn't turned on.

There was warning, just either one (as mentioned) people didn't have a weather radio or it wasn't turned on, or two, they were asleep and couldn't hear the sirens.

The sirens are designed to warn those that are outside to get indoors when there is severe weather in the area. News stations were covering the storm for a full two hours prior to the tornado touching down.

One of the largest success stories that came out of this was something that the local radio/tv stations started doing a few years ago. Some have installed AutoDialers which allows for a station to do a mass calling when a warning is issued. I have heard from several people that 20 minutes before the storm hit their home and/or cell phones rang warning them of the storm. Those who got the warning rushed to their basement or center of their homes. They were alive to tell the story.

I bet more people subscribe to this in the future.

Is that Autodialer system something that you have to sign up for or is it automatic...just curious b/c i live in a town that has a chemical weapons storage depot in it and that would be another great precaution that our city might want to start.

If your city/county is going to do it then the numbers would probably be entered into it. (The home numbers anyway.) If a private business is going to do it then the citizen would probably have to give them their phone number(s).

This would be especially beneficial for hotels and such where there laots of people that may not get the warning.

Example:
When I made the trip to Stuttgart, there was a warning issued, luckily I watching a movie on AMC and flipping back to the weather channel to keep a track of it. When the warning was issued, grabbed my essentials (dog, jump kit, keys) went down stairs and told the front desk. At first she was unsure of what to do, I told her she needed to start calling around and let the guests know they need to take cover. Thankfully we got everyone down stairs and out of harms way. The tornado did come through, the large tree in front of the Best Western was knocked over and the Wester Sizzilin' sign next door was blown out.

If the hotel had an automated dialer that dialed each room with the recording to take cover immediately could save time. (IE the personnell could be gathering blankets and getting first aid kits ready).

Just my experience. But a along with sirens, a countywide automated dialer could be a life saver especially in rural areas where they may live too far out to hear the sirens go off. You've sparked me to push for this in the tornado prone area of Stuttgart, AR, they get lots of tourism during the tornado season (dog trials, duck call festivals)

My county has a "reverse 911" system. Set up to call "lists" the county has on file.... not sure if it is for the general population, but the DES uses it to activate their own staff... Recored by the Dispatch Supervisor, plays a recording through 1x, then hangs up. The problem with this system is that the "telezaper" do-dad from RadioShack shuts it up, too.

The hotel has a way to do that.... the "Wake up calls" are usually all computer generated now.... they should be able to use that system as a mass notifier.
