Yesterdays shift started out really crappily (thats the opposite of happily btw). Three Medics called in sick, leaving us with only 5 trucks for the entire county (we are already spread thin with all 8 up). My partner was proclaiming what a crappy day we were in store for and how fowl his mood was. And we didn't even make it to radio pager check before we got toned for our first call at one of the assisted living homes.
We got toned for an ECHO response (unsecure scene) for an 87 yo/F who had been found by housekeeping with a GSW. Our MedCom (shift CPT) responded as well. PD was like 15 min out, so he decided we would go in with the security from the home. We walked into her apt and she was dead. She had a DNR taped to her wall abover her head that was dated the day before, her living will taped next to it, her families contact numbers next to that, her list of specific instructions on who to call next, and her note next to it. Little lady had lost her husband of like 70 years just a couple weeks ago, found out her daughter has brain cancer earlier this week, and her 2 y/o great-grandbaby was killed in a MVC two days ago by his babysitter who was DWI. She had drapped towels around her shoulders and laid them around the floor, and shot hereself.
My partner was right. It was a crappy day.
But on the flip side, it was sunny, gorgeous, the Gulf was flat (no waves), Green Flags (safe swimming conditions), and everytime we had to cross the bridge the sun reflected off the water like a BAZILLION little diamonds that were dancing just for me.
