Just remember to drive with due regard. Not every driver is going to be under the influence of mind-altering substances, and a good enough lawyer will put attention on reckless actions that responders commit.

On top of that, our vehicles are incredibly heavy and need to be respected as such.

Key takeaways:

1) "The crash report says the fire truck was going 61 to 67 miles an hour at the time of the crash." 67 mph in an engine is reckless, especially in city streets. Fire Law Blog has additional information
2) They had a dashcam, but it wasn't functional, as per TFD dash cam in fatal engine crash; in addition, there were no policies that required the dashcam to be tested or working.
3) this is the second lawsuit the FD has recieved as a result of this crash: here is the first

Personally, I think the FD should settle the first lawsuit and fight the 2nd lawsuit. A person under the influence shouldn't be able to cause a crash and then sue the FD for damages; it sets a horrible precedent, and the ambulance chasing attorney who filed this case should be tarred and feathered. In addition, going 60+ on a local road in an engine is unsafe, reckless, and I hope the driver was ticketed, too.

4) People WILL do stupid things. Some might be high as a kite, while others are just distracted; but the driver of the vehicle is still responsible for what happens when they are behind the wheel.

In short, I agree. I try to follow my mindset I've been trained to have: "It's their emergency, not yours."
