Teens Hit By Train

I can't imagine what their families must be going through. The only thing that struck me as odd was that being still daylight out walking inbetween the rails, wouldn't the two boys have heard/seen the train heading down the tracks?

I am sure you can. You may not want to imagine.

what is that comment supposed to mean?

NO ONE can imagine those kinds of horrors, if they have never been through it...

you should know better than that...

i'm sure you didn't mean for your post to sound like that... i hope.

Apparently, and I do not know how true it is or do i want to test it, if your walking straight you can not hear the train coming because all the sound gets pushed to the side, id imagine youd feel the tracks shaking, but who knows.

Or they were talking to each other and ignoring everything else...
Or they were listining to their iPod's at bone-shattering volumes...

Until the local PD/coroner issue a statement, we won't know.

in high school, we had tracks that ran adjacent to our school grounds perpendicular to an interstate. It would be quicker for some people to walk on the right-of-way on the tracks than to walk around the interstate to the bridge and many people did it. Each year we would have a presentation by our school administrators as to the dangers. Apparently:

1.) You will not feel the vibrations until the train is very close unless you are walking on the track itself. The purpose of the gravel and wooden crossbeams is to stabilize the tracks so they will not vibrate as they are designed as a cushion.

2.) IF you are directly in front of the train, you will not hear the rumble until the train is close, if you are talking, you will not hear the train until its too close to avoid, if you are wearing headphones, you will not hear the train at all.

3.) Do not rely on the train sounding its horn - the engineer may not be paying full attention to the tracks in front of him as he has many other tasks such as looking at gauges inside the train and signals outside the train. They showed us a picture of what a person looks like to the engineer of a train, it really is hard to see!

I have confirmed the being able to hear it for myself as I have been walking across a crossing as a train is approaching and you cannot hear anything (I bet you can when it's relaly close to you but i was long out of the way!)

It sounds ridiculous but I am terrified of trains. I never realized quite how massive they are until I assisted at a derailment.
