Hello,

I am currently in the EMT program at an accredited college in Florida but I am looking to move to NY shortly after I finish the class. I was curious if anyone knew anything about whether or not NY state would have an issue if you take their state test even though you were trained in FLorida. Who would I contact to find out more information?

If anyone has any information on this topic please feel free to contact me. I would greatly appreciate it..

Thank you!

He has no choice in Florida...all EMTs take the National Registry.

I'm trying not to test in Florida considering I am moving to Ny and will be working in New York. Also, since I am learning the national standard in Fl, will the Ny state test have things on it specific to New York that I have not learned?

Here are the NYS protocols:

It is my understanding that in New York State, you have to take and pass an approved EMT-b class to take the NYS test.

IMHO, take your Florida class and the state test: 1) its good general practice and 2) you never know if you will want to work in FL 3) you are already in the thick of it.

Then take an accelrated class when you get to NYS, which will be a refresher and clarify NYS specific protocols.

As mentioned, the only testing option for FL EMT school graduates is the National Registry.

Thank you to those who replied. I called Ny state to find out that you were right they do not except national registry and that I would have to take the NY emt course in order to sit for their state test however they do have reciprocity. So if I take the Florida State test which is the National Registry then I can just transfer it over. I am a bit confused on how that transfer works. With reciprocity do I have to take another test in NY or will they just issue me a Ny license>?

My instructor also said find out whether or not even though they dont except national registry will they except that as reciprocity because in that case I would not have to travel back to Florida...

If anyone has further information, I would love to hear suggestions.

Thanks again

why would you not test in Florida? You can't test in NY. The class is not a valid NYS class. You need to take the Florida test and get reciprocity.

NYS will accept your FLORIDA certification and you become CERTIFIED NY EMT. No tests are involved. National Registry alone ithout the Florida certification will not get you certification.

Step 1- Take FL test (NREMT) and get a FL license/cert
Step 2- Use the FL license/cert to apply for a NY license/cert
Step 3- Get a job in NY
