I'm ecstatic about the way my shift went last night.
Some back story:
I was hired at my current job, a private transport company in ABQ, NM that also does 911 in 3 other counties, as an attend only because I'm under 21. I turn 21 on November 8th, so it's not too much of a wait now, but I was hired 6 months ago yesterday.
I've been told repeatedly that I won't be able to drive except in an emergency until I turn 21, as the insurance company will not make exceptions. So I've worked my tail off to make myself good at attending. On heavy call volume days I can run 13 calls in a 12 hour shift, with me attending all of them (this includes flight crew transports, so I've seen some interesting stuff even being a BLS unit), and trying to make sure management notices me for something good.

Well, last night as I was going on shift I got my reward. My manager that was checking out our kit tossed me the keys for my usual rig and told me to take him driving. I've had the usual EVO course already for a just in case type scenario. To make a long story short, I get back to base with him and he tells me that I now have full driving privileges :D
It made me incredibly happy. I know it doesn't seem like much, but this means a ton to me.

just be careful, driving an ambulance isnt ALL its cracked up to be. yeah, we got lights and woop-woops, but theres a lot of responsibility that goes with that too. i wish you lots of luck and be safe out there, bro!!B)

Congrats =)

Oh yea, I've noticed that :P I'm just really happy to get a break from attending all the time. Don't get me wrong, I love being in the back with the patient, but on long days having to right all those reports sucks (especially as our toughbook system hasn't quite gone on line yet)

Congrats!

Just remember to be careful, ESPECIALLY at intersections. DO come to a full stop at EVERY intersection and when you're driving watch everyone else around you; never assume that other drivers will yield to you....and cover the brake.

Good luck!

That's awesome. Congrats!

Good job.

Maybe the biggest adjustment, however, is learning to honor the moment over other-, or self-imposed restrictions. A large part of that is developing (over time) an eye for leaving yourself an out.
