Aloha,

I am very interested in becoming an EMT and have been for a few years. I used to have the want to join our local police department, but after much thought I feel I really want to get into EMS. I am more about wanting to help others in need. Not to mention with me being prescribed prozac for anxiety would be in instant no for trying to get into PD. (Even if the anxiety only happened when I am off the meds for a year).

Anyway back on topic, I have completed the two pre reqs required for entry into EMT basic, having placed a B in ENG 100 and C in Med term. However, my GPA is not high enough and so I am taking pre reqs for the MICT courses as recommended by the EMS program before entry into the program, as well as volunteering at a hospital via the red cross. My question is, do you have any study tips? I ended up failing my anatomy course due to lack of studying, and am retaking it this upcoming semester. I've honestly never studied properly before so any tips would be helpful.

I have the want to succeed and get into the field, but I'm not yet there academically.
P.S. sorry for the wall of text!

In all honesty, most EMT-B classes don't require any prerequisites, or a minimum GPA. It is (in most cases) a one quarter or semester class, requiring only a high school diploma or GED for entry. It's purely vocational education that teaches very basic skills.

I don't know where you are, but I'd look for another program, apply, study, pass the test and become an EMT.

Sorry for the late response! I am located in Honolulu, and the only way to become an EMT is to go through our community college from what I believe. Only one college offers the program and to gain entry you need a 2.0 GPA or higher, placement of math in 24 or higher, have volunteer hours with patient contact, and complete ENG 100 and Med Terminology. My cousins BF had made it in but quit due to becoming an officer, however he said a friend of his didn't make it in since he had lower grades, which scares me. It is a one semester course as you mentioned. I will be soon attending an information session on the course.

As far as studying just read, read, read and if possible attend extra labs abd remember that there's not such thing as stupid questions.
