Hi there. I recently passed the NREMT and am gearing up for the dreaded job hunt in Southern California. I live in San Berdoo county and would like to apply for jobs in any and all of the neighboring counties. But I really don't want to pay the 100+ dollars for a license in each county that I would like to look for a job. Then again, I don't want to squelch my job opportunities by sticking to searching for work in one county. Do companies like for their applicants to have their license in hand or is it ok to wait to pay for my license once I know where I will be working?

Thanks for any help.

Andy

For most counties in CA they only require the state EMT certificate (CA went away from county certs for the EMT level). So for San Bernardino and Riverside counties that is all you need. There are a few select counties that require an "expanded scope" certificate in order to work (LA, OC).

In CA there are already a bunch of EMTs who have everything lined up and ready to go. So your best bet would be to have everything before you apply to the company. 3 years ago when I was hired I had to turn in copies of all my certificates before I could turn in an application.

Hi and thanks for the response. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my original post. But I meant the license, not the certificates. I do have the LA county expanded scope cert as well as the NREMT. What I was talking about was the license in whatever county I will be working.

CA only issues certificates for the EMT level and not licenses.

I see. I guess I'm a bit confused since I'm brand new to the whole process. So I'm fine getting my certificate through San Bernardino? Is there any benefit to getting it in another county? Again, thanks for the help.

Not really. Some counties cost a couple of dollars more than others but that's the only real difference.
