I can probably guess what the original content of this post was, so I will just say it up front... If you are doing something that I feel detriments your ability to provide patient care, damn right I am going to call you on it and will go to the supervisor with it if deemed necessary. Call it snitching or whatever you want.

/End Rant

Oh oh, and if it breaks a law, I'm calling Crime Stoppers and cashing in on their $1,000 reward!

Crime DOES pay... just not the criminal. ;)

Also, don't forget.. If you turn in a corporation for tax evasion, you get 30% of what they owe as a whistleblower reward!

Sorry, I just got off of a very bad shift, lost a patient that I don't feel should've died (As if that were in my control in the first place), and just feel damn horrible
about it. Today wasn't a good day by any means, and it really F**n sucks when a kid dies and you couldn't save them.

I'm going to bed, CISD in the morning.

Good night,

Im sorry.

Oh, and for the record, call Crime Stoppers first, then call the police. If you report it directly to the police, then you don't get the Crime Stoppers reward.

Yeah... learned that the hard way before.

*sigh*

I had good plans for the $1,000 too.

Head up.

Im sure you did everything in your power.

And yes it sucks when a child dies, most of the time it isnt whithin our power to change the outcome.

Dont listen to the bullcrap either, it isnt just another patient. It is instilled in us to protect the most innocent, when we lose one only time heals those wounds.

Good luck

Please, don't apologize for being affected like a human being. Give yourself credit for mentioning it, even if you don't go any further with it here. Anyone who claims immunity from feeling lousy at not being able to save a kid is a liar.

I say you CAN feel the pain AND get back to work.

Anyone who tries to convince himself there's no pain just makes their belly a little harder and they become a bit more insensitive to others. In the end, it's the silent ones who get eaten up. You know some, I'm sure. Damn good Mechanics, but a little lacking on the appreciation of life side.

Things like this will happen and in each case, you'll have a choice; Face it or Stuff it (deny, avoid, medicate...you know the drill.) Facing it is uncomfortable for a while, but the knot in your belly goes away a whole lot quicker. As another poster said, time does it, but you can actually choose to make it accelerate, or let it slowly drive you nuts.

Not much I can add to the other posts. It's good that you're not trying to bury what you feel.

Dead is dead. Grieve for a moment. Review the events briefly. Learn from them and move on. If you continually dwell on it it will eat you up. I am not saying you will not recall some patients that you lose.

But again dead is dead no matter the age of the patient.

Thanks to everyone for your concern. I have been away for a few days (mandatory off time given the severity of the situation) and have thought about it a lot. I still would rather not talk about what happened though, I just know that this time there is a ghost that will follow me around for the rest of my career whether I want it too or not. I didn't make any medical mistakes, but I still wish I could've made the save, as we all do.. not for the sake of looking like some hero staring death in the face and not blinking, but just to know that a child was going to grow up and that a family was not going to suffer the loss of a young life.

Thank you for the concern, though.
