So my boss just called me. Last week, there was a girl in our ER whose boyfriend was being a real SOB. She was pregnant (like 5 weeks) and spotting. We were crazy busy and he starts raising hell about why she isn't being seen.

I explain to him we don't see people in the order they come in, but based on the severity of their illness. He starts blabbering on about how his baby is going to die if she doesn't get seen right now. So I look her up, and find out she just delivered a baby 6 weeks ago and now shes pregnant again! UGH!

I was very polite...for me...about the next thing I told him...I went something like this..

Well your girlfriend probably will loose this pregnancy. She just had a baby and her body is not ready to be pregnant again.

He gets all pissy and starts yelling at me that I am trying to kill his baby.

Again..and I swear I was polite...as sweet as sugar when I replied something like..

Its not a baby! Its a mass of tissue, kind of like a cyst. Its not alive and this is not a life threatening situation. Now go sit down and I will let the nurses know you want to be seen quickly.

So, he complained to my boss that I called his "baby"...and this is what he wrote in his email to her... a "blob of tissue that doesn't deserve to live."

So our hospital has a class they send people to who have complaints lodged. Its kind of like a bandaid on the invalid complaint...they tell the patient they will have the employee undergo some sensitivity counseling.

And I have to go. Learn how to tell morons in the waiting room to shut the hell up, but say it nicely.

Whatever. I just better get paid to go.

OH, and she reminded me, again, that Just because the thought pops into my head, I dont' have to say it out loud.

Whatever. Biatch

I hate my job.

It's about time you go, you hurt my feelings every day *sniff* *cry* *snivel* I bet you hurt countless others throughout your day!

:P :P :P

Nice!

Does anyone remember 3rd watch... back when it was 'good'???

Bosco had to go to sensitivity training. Funny as h*ll episode.... timley for my FD too, we watched it the week after our whole department went through mandatory sexual harrassment and discimantion sensitivity training.

Fun class.

Jon

Fun? Umm..ok.

She tried to put a positive spin on it..she was like..hey, Randy (this ER tech. Funny as hell he is. Guess the patients don't think so.) has to go.

Whatever. I still better get paid. And they need to provide lunch for us too.

I think you should walk up to the instructor and say

"Hi, how the hell are you today?" ROFLOL

OR

You could say, "Hi my name is Princess, but people usually call me *****" LOL

And do either one with a smartass looking smile.

I remember once

I had to take anger management class after a situation with my Lt... anywho I walk in there and they are putting us through sensitivity.... at the end they gave us scenerios Mine was "a Man rearends your vehicle he had been trying to find his pen when he looked up it was too late how would you respond"

My answer "Id knock the s**t out of him..yelling what the hell is wrong with you are you blind its reasons like you People shouldnt be driving...then I would proceed to kick the tire" at any rate Princess if they ask what occured you can always answer with "I never said it was a mass of tissue that deserved to die..I merely stated that with as shallow as their gene pool is they have no reason to reproduce and it would be a favor to humanity...I was being sensitive to the needs of the community I swear!"

So I went and picked up the schedule for this class.

In the morning we will have "guest speakers" to include the heads of various departments, the COO, and our Ethics and Compliance Officer.

Then Lunch.

Then in the afternoon we get to discuss what brought us to the "Effectively Dealing with Upset and Traumatized Patients Without Causing Further Harm" class. See its not sensitivity training. Its Crap.

Then we get to Roll Play our situations both with the attitudes that got us there, and then again with a more positive attitude. POSITIVE!!! I am the most freakin positive half glass full and all that crap person you will ever meet!! I practically do damn cartwheels in the mornings just because the sun has come up and its another freakin day!

Whatever.

I asked if I can get some CEU's out of it. She said No. Biatch.

Wow...so how did you know that she will probably miscarriage? Obviously her body was ready to be pregnant again or she wouldnt have gotten pregnant. For an agitated boyfriend already I can see why he didnt respond well to that. Do you have the credentials to even make that statement?

Its not a baby! Its a mass of tissue, kind of like a cyst. Its not alive
All I can say to this one is damn... This is a very sensitive and ethical issue to begin with. So when is life actually formed? At what stage? My opinion is at conception and at 5 weeks it is alive! If you would have imposed your OPINION upon me in that situation you should be prepared for some choice words and a raised voice as well.

Your comments were unprofessional and out of line. It was your job to calm the situation and reassure not assert your believes or ethics upon someone coming to the hospital for help. You actually enhanced the conflict by what you said.

Is everyone else to afraid to be objective on this? This really isnt even remotely funny to me despite how the boyfriend was acting. Yeah, people coming to the ED have no clue alot of times and arent expected to. Thatz why they come to us. While trying at times we still need to be understanding and view things from the patient and family's perspective not our own. And who are we to judge someone else?

BINGO.

OK in all seriousness I probably would have called it neither a child or a mass of tissue.

But I probably would I have said your girlfriend will likely miscarry as her body is not ready to carry to full-term.

Just leave it open for your patients to call it what they want and you stay out of legal trouble.

No it isn't. She had a baby 6 weeks ago, she is 5 weeks pregnant now. Do tha math. She would have had to conceived either in the hospital, or within a day or two of coming out. There is a reason your supposed to wait 6 weeks before having sex again, let alone gettting pregnant.

This pregnany was terminated. It was ectopic.

This is a very sensitive and ethical issue to begin with

Your right. Very sensitive and ethical. We probably shouldn't debate when life begins, that never leads anywhere. And people just always get angry at what the other person was saying.

It was your job to calm the situation and reassure

Funny you should say that. I am actually the person my department comes to when they need that exact thing to happen. I get all the Psych patients, pissed off people waiting in the waiting room, Families of Caridac Arrest Patients, and any other generally agitated patient. Don't really get it, but in all the other emails/letters/comment cards sent to Admin, I am the "girl at the front that really made their wait easier" or the one that "bent over backwards to help them during their loss" or the one that they should do everything to "keep, because she is a joy do deal with" and it continues.

But thanks for the education, maybe now I can take that, show it to my boss and tell'em "See I got my sensitivity training."

Your comments were unprofessional and out of line.

Perhaps. I actually sometimes even think things through before I say them. On this particular night, he just happened to be the straw as he was causing the entire waiting room to become agitated and angry. And before you start, no they could not hear what I was saying to him, we have private desks where we talk to patients. So tell us, have you ever spoke exactly what your thinking?

This really isnt even remotely funny to me despite how the boyfriend was acting

THe boyfriend was escorted out by our security before it was over, they had already been called /bc of his behavior before he talked to me. He had already cussed out 3 nurses, and had his girlfriend hysterical by the time he left.

This really isnt even remotely funny to me despite how the boyfriend was acting.

Never said it was. The whole point was about how ridiculous this class is. Its not like, take this class and then if you ever piss off another patient your fired. No, its take this class we told the paitent you'd take just to make them happy. And lets not even start with the patient lieing. My boss told me it doent' sound like something I would say, and I told her what was actually said, and the tone in which I did.

And who are we to judge someone else?

Have you ever used the terms "shallow gene pool" "too stupid to live" "skell" or any of the others that so many of us label someone with? If not, great! You are one heck of a stand up person. But if you have, well then you have judged someone. Guess what, we all do it. Think about it and pay attention in your day to day life. If you find your not passing judgement on someone, ever..then your kidding yourself.

I am with you on most of this, I think I would have put them into a room at any reasonable cost and let her sit in there while I pulled the idiot out to the ambulance bay and gave him the real what for, you were a little nicer than I would have been. I would have explained to him that his irresponsible and depraved actions were endagering her life and were going to damage her personal well being because her body is absolutley not ready to bear another child. Now his current irresponsible and idiotic actions were going to cause him to be romoved from the hospital as well as creating a stressfull environment for his girlfriend. I would then tell the doctor that the girl needs to be checked for signs of abuse because it is obvious that this guy is the type all the way.

Of course I am not at all afraid to come to blows with a total a**hole. I only fear the people who are in total control.

I was not going to respond to this until the last two comments. It is my opinion that you are so busy trying to defend your actions here that you seem to be missing the big picture. I will start by saying having not been there to witness this, had I been one of the parties involved I would have complained about you as well. I spent a significant ammount of my time in EMS in an ER, and some of that in triage. While triage is set up to classify pt's into treatment categories, it is not there to give diffinitive diagnosis to pt's. That is why they go on back into a room in the ER. So from the first words of your beginning this subject, I feel you were wrong. It is also my opinion that one of the most crucial parts of EMS no matter where you practice it is to be comforting and to take people during their most stressfull and worrysome time, and comfort them to the best of your ability. In this you failed miserably. If this man was as out of hand as you say he was, call security. If you do not have that, defer to the charge nurse. I would also like to bring up the fact that you said you hate your job. In this instance, also my opinion, it shows.

You are preceived in your job by others by very few standards. How well you play with others, how well you do your job, and how professional you act and look. 1 or 2 out of three never seems to be enough at one time. Public preception of you matters. It is a fact as wll that no matter how good you do your job and for how long, you screw up one time and none of the good things you have done in the past will matter much. This families preception of you was not good. That by itself matters. Right, wrong or indifferent, it is significant.

I will end by stating this, your attitude towards the sensitivity training is not positive to say the least. If you do not go in to this class as a learning experience you will not learn a thing and I would bet we will be commenting on this subject somewhere in the future. Bottom line is this, you were not there for this family in the capacity they were expecting, it was their opinion you were not, that puts you in the wrong regardless as to how you feel.

I would like to know when an excited family member worried and or scared for a loved one who is also very excitable, became criteria for an abusive situation....

I have heard and had contact with this situation with some frequency, Where a BF or husband will force themselves on the woman who was still in the hospital bed from having the baby. These people have no regard for the safety and well being of their spouse, and in every situation that I am aware of, there was abuse- in fact one case of abuse resulted in the death of the woman (blood clot dislodged- may be from abuse, sexual activity, the miscarriage, regardless he was charged). When someone is frantic, that is not unreasonable behavior, when someone is beligerent because they are reaping the consequences of a despicable act, then that person is not eligible for kid gloves. The one who deserves the sympathy and counseling is the victim- that is what that woman is.

My post was clear as to this point- his behavior at the hospital was not the depraved act, the irresponsible sexual activity was.
