Hi.
I came here looking for information on EMS Training, and to get a feel for what life as an EMT is like. Over the past few days I found both.

I'm a student in Ann Arbor, MI. Community College, not the University. EMT work attracts me because I'm very familiar with medical practices already. Spent enough time in the university hospital for a total colectomy in my teenage years. I'm physically fit, willing to work any hours and maintain professionalism in any situation.

I already work long and absurd hours at a bar - goodbye weekends. Seeing that EMT's often work similar shifts gives me a level of comfort. I concentrate my studies in Chemistry and Biology, and have always done well in the sciences.

A few questions I've had difficulty answering for myself despite my best attempts at researching them:

1) I see that the state of Michigan Calls EMT-I/85's "EMT Specialists". How does the certification and duties differ from standard I/85s?
2) Can you earn certification for EMT-B/I in Michigan, or any state, by only studying and taking tests rather than attending courses?
3) With the NREMT-B Test being Pass/Fail, and not scored, how can I make myself stand out among my peers?

First and formost, welcome to the tribe! :) This is a great starting point for infomation, I know there will be more posts for your questions!! Good luck! :)

Welcome to EMTLife!

1) The EMT-Intermediate/Specialist level is the same as the NREMT Intermediate level. They just sometimes use the term "Specialist."

2) You'll need to attend a course in order to be an EMT. How do you expect to learn the hands-on skills without using the equipment?

3) Like any occupation that requires a test (nursing, lawyer, etc.), no one really cares what score you got on the test. You'll be hired based on an oral interview, skills examination, and your personality and interview ability.

Have you looked in Huron Valley Ambulance's EMT-Basic program? HVA is really the most highly regarded EMS service in Michigan. They run a tight ship, and offer great opportunities for their employees.

welcome to the life
