So I'm sitting in my hotel room in Carlsbad enjoying my vacation in sunny southern Cali. I am loving it here. Loving it to the point that I'm actually tempted to move out here. So with that in mind, any San Diego folks out there? I'd like to get more info about the region, specifically info for my family. Safe living areas, nice schools, etc. Area employment opportunities are appreciated, but I probably will continue in the remote environment. I know the cost of living is through the roof compared to Houston, but I have not been this peaceful in quite a while, neither has my family. Very few places have had this kind of a knee jerk reaction and the few that have would not even be a consideration by my wife. But even she is open to the idea.

Someone give me the 411..............

thanks!

I live in Santee with my parents and it's an amazing city. It's a suburban sized city, but everyone here is pretty nice, and very little crime. Lots of schools around here, both HS, and Elementray school. We're about 20-25 minutes from the beach for the summer time, and about a half hour away from snow during the winter :)

And it's all fire/rescue here, but you can try to get on with AMR as a medic. But other than that, you'll be getting BLS.

I've lived here for a few years now, if you have any questions I'll do my best.

It truly is an amazing place to live. (Especially carlsbad B))

I've been living in the La Jolla area since that's where my school is located. But its not very friendly on the wallet, and if you are looking for a house "Fa getta bout it!!!" Rent for a 3-4 bdr in Carlsbad or La Jolla can easily be $3500-5000 a month, couple mil to buy. I would recommend looking at neighborhoods inland. There are parts of Clairemont Mesa, Santee, El Cajon, La Mesa that are nice and MUCH more affordable, and you still are close enough to the beaches, downtown, etc.

I don't know what you budget is, or what your living standards are (Me being a college kid, all I need is roof, water, electricity, and proximity to a beach) but I am sure you are more civilized than me.

Just north of SD county is the far south end of Riverside County. Temecula and Murrieta would be an area you would like. Very suburban, but not in the shadow of the big cities. Good schools. Good neighborhoods. Right in the middle of the wine country with lots of beautiful countryside. Not too far from the beach for the day. A couple of nice tribal casinos close by with awesome buffets. Housing prices are actually surprisingly reasonable right now. It's a buyer's market, so houses are going for peanuts in very nice neighborhoods. You're halfway between LA and SD on the 15, so you can be anywhere you want to be pretty quickly (except during the 18 hours a day when traffic is gridlocked). I'd move back there in a heartbeat, if it wasn't for the fact that California sucks.

:P:P Only one place worse than cali and its east coast so at least the bottom two are far apart.

If you have kids, look very close look at California's education system at all levels. It has taken a big hit in funding with many unstable futures for some schools.

Also, if you plan to work as a paramedic, check out the scope of practice for different counties. You might feel like an EMT-B again compared to where you came from.

When you're ready to come home and get out of the field, you can get filthy stinking rich by opening up a ten week paramedic patch factory. They're very popular in SoCal. Ten grand a head from fireman wannabes all year long. But, as Vent said, you definitely would not want to practice there.

Two very excellent points! I was looking over a few of the local agencies, SOP's seem to be quite restrictive with limited treatment modalities. But I suppose after a decade of minimal, if any, medical supervision, anywhere I go will be a distinct change. I'm open to the idea. Again, I may never practice in Cali, I may stay remote. Who knows...............

I'll keep my eyes on education funding. That will be a deal breaker. After all, I want my children to be more edumacated than me......................

Thanks to all for the info.

Right now I live with my parents in the Scripps Ranch area. If you're looking for most bang for your buck and a nice family environment i suggest looking into San Elijo Hills. Zip code is 92078 which it shares with part of San Marcos but right now 3500 sq ft homes are goin for $549k and for that price you can get a 2700 sq ft with ocean view at the top of the hill.
