Abrasive...yes...harsh, not so much. 
The reason I have the respect I do, in my circle of co workers, friends and family is mostly due to the fact that I do not sugar coat much. I tell it like it is so there is no misinterpretation. People know exactly where I stand and how I feel about whatever I am discussing. My students over the years have appreciated it as well, some after the fact but they have made a point to tell me they appreciated and benefited from it.
The tone of delivery was very much warranted in my opinion and we will just have to agree to disagree.
