Hey guys and gals. I very much want to study to be an EMT but have a couple questions... How tall is too tall? I am roughly 5' 9" and am afraid that my height might hold me back in some way. Also, I know that the job is very physically demanding. Any advice on how to train for it? I am in the middle of losing weight already and I'd love any advise I can get on what to focus on to excel at this profession. Once again, please advise. : )

If 5'9'' was too tall the average male would be excluded from working in EMS.

And Crossfit.

I didn't even think about it like that. lol And thank you. : )

Hate to break it to you but 5'9 isn't that tall. I am 5'8 and I am the shortest guy I know in EMS around my area.

Being a girl, I've always been self conscious about it. I just wanted to make sure that something that I couldn't change wasn't going to hold me back from what I want. : )

potential EMT's: worrying about things that do no matter.

I'm 5'9" and I felt like my size was great for EMS, We aren't too far from the ground but tall enough to reach things, plus we don't have to hunch down too far to walk in the back of the ambulance, I'm 5'9 and stocky. As long as you lift with your legs and lift weights a little you should have no problem in Ems anything you need help with, you will have a partner to pick up the slack

5'9 is probably the perfect height for EMS. Not so short that you have a hard time loading the cot onto the ambulance, but not so tall that you have to stoop or worry about having a short partner that kills your back.

Ultimately though you tend to see all body types and heights in EMS. Probably the only body type that might have problems are really short really thin people, usually petite women. You see some of them taking EMT classes, but they usually wind up as ER techs or going on for something else after EMT school, because it can be really challenging for them(and their partners) in the field.

Paramedics: insulting the next generation.

Yea cause we're all total asses

You'll be absolutely fine at 5'9".

Train with purposeful movements. Having a huge bench press number is cool but is it really all that useful?

Well the person hadn't even started class and didn't know.
It was kind of a silly question but why scare someone off with an insulting response?

Not to far off. My squad is mainly tiny little gals, maybe a buck twenty and it can pose a problem for some, but these gals have a lot of punch in them and can hold their own.
We make it policy not to lift overly heavy people alone and call for assist
