Why is it when you’re a student, and you try to do your clinical time, specially trying with a Dept.? Why is it so hard?

For hospital time, it was pretty easy! The hardest thing I’ve had is trying to get on with a dept. They either don't accept EMT-B’s right now, or won’t accept students, cause of the liability issue...Kind of frustrating...

I also have to do a thing for class…On asking other EMS, some of these questions, than I have to write a report on what I’ve learne. You can send me an e-mail if you don’t want to post your answers on here, or you can :) up to you :)

*some of the question I have yanked from “Wannabemt"*

Doesnt your school partner with a service in the area that will allow you to ride as a student? Don't they try and help you at all?

HMMM... Some of these questions are exactly (even the same words) like what WannaBe posted yesterday, Me thinks you two are either the same person, or in the same class.....But here are the answers.

edit...OOPS...didn't see where you SAID you snatched them from WannBe

What State are you from? Florida

What’s your favorite color? Purple

If you could tell me one thing that you know now that would help me what would it be? If you don't know the answer or how to do a task, ask. Don't pretend you do then make yourself look like an *** or worse harm your patient.

or..

Ensure you have total familial support. Training takes time and dedication and sometimes you have to sacrifice seeing the kids soccer game, or play one less game of whatever with them to ensure your ready for class or to go to your clinical rotations. Having that support will also help you when it gets tough and you start to question if your meant to be an EMT. Someone to kick you in your butt and say "You can do it" is wonderful to have.

What do you love most about your job? Everything. Its the BEST JOB EVER!!! Its the job I have been waiting all my life to have and didn't know it.

What do you dislike most about your job? Sometimes, like last shift, we get so busy and I REALLY REALLY have to pee, but the call is taking for ever or were on a long distace stat transfer, or as we are dropping on patient in the ER dispatch is telling us to hurry up there are calls waiting and I still have to pee really really bad.

and you can add to this..

People who spend the ENTIRE shift complaining about how much they hate thier jobs. If they hate it SOOO much, its time to move along. McDonalds is always hiring.

What do you make and what is your certification level? $10/hour. I am "relief". All that means is I get paid more and they don't have to offer benefits. I can still work a crazy amount of hours if I want to. Like next week. I have 3 - 24 hour and 1 8 hour shift scheduled between Monday and Saturday. I am a Basic.

What was your training like? 6 months. 3 nights a week and a bunch of Saturdays. Plus clinical roation time. It was nerve wrecking, hard, and awesome. Like you and a lot of us here, I worked 40-50 hours a week at my day job and still made it to class. Never missed one, was not late for a single class.

What were your first days like? I am still in my "first days." How long will this last? Hell, I don't know. Perhaps until I learn how to either go hours and hours and hours and hours without needing to pee, or my bladder gets bigger.

How well do you work with other people in the field? I get along with everyone :P Or at least I try.

I've been going here and there, So i'm sorry for making everyne have to "Re-write it" I am sorry.

What State are you from? New York

What’s your favorite color?Blue, can you tell?

If you could tell me one thing that you know now that would help me what would it be? Study hard, and practice makes *almost* perfect.

What do you love most about your job? Being able to comfort someone in their darkest hour (sometimes we end up comforting our own crew too)

What do you dislike most about your job? The politcal bull involved in any organization, but especially volunteer fire departments/ambulance corps.

What do you make and what is your certification level? $0 - EMT Critical Care (NY designation, ALS, above EMT-I, below EMT-P)

What was your training like? Basic was 5 months, 2 nights a week, plus 10 hours of clinicals. ALS was 9 months, 2 nights a week, plus 53 hours of hospital clinicals and 90 hours of actual call time. For both, there was a lot of out of class studying and practicing.

What were your first days like? A little crazy since I was let loose on my own right off the bat (small department) but very fufilling and lots of good learning experiences.

How well do you work with other people in the field? I work well with others in the field. You have to remember that you are here to serve a customer - and in this case your service may make the difference between life and death - so everyone needs to put the bull aside and get the job done skillfully, efficiently, and professionally.

What State are you from? A vegetative state.

What’s your favorite color? Depends on my mood. I prefer black, blue, & grey. I also enjoy yellow.

If you could tell me one thing that you know now that would help me what would it be? IMHO, practicing as a basic for a while before moving up to a higher level (I or P, state depending) is a good idea.

What do you love most about your job? Helping people & gadgets. I love gadgets! Gadgets are the thing!! MORE GADGETS!!! GADGETS!!!!

What do you dislike most about your job? Superiors who recognize your potential and put you down every chance they get so they can feel better about themselves.

What do you make and what is your certification level? Basic. I’m still trying to get hired so I can get paid. I practice at a volunteer fire department. In the meantime, I’m focusing on firefighter training and getting my NREMT cert. Sweeeeeet.

What was your training like? 200 hours of classroom didactics, practicals and clinicals. I lost a fiancée over it. They don’t like to sit on the back burner.

What were your first days like? I spent alot of time saying, "What if I had done this instead?" I now limit myself to internally questioning my actions ONE time for ONE call, on ONE shift.

How well do you work with other people in the field? I’m a nice guy and I work well with others. The "chief complaint" (haha) appears to be that I need to relax, but I assume that comes with experience... and I don’t have much of that… yet.
