Hey everyone,

Does anyone know any specifics of any private companies in Maryland (starting wages, wage increases, shift lengths, overall satisfation/dissatisfaction with the company)? Looking to apply soon after I receive my EMT-B. Just wanted to get an idea of what a few of these companies are like. Thanks!

Well, all the private companies in Maryland are IFT only, 911 is provided either by volunteer agencies, county EMS, or county/city fire departments.

On the upper Eastern Shore where I am, Best Care is the most commonly seen IFT company. I think it's a pretty standard gig as far as I know...they have BLS and ALS trucks, and I think EMT pay is around $11/hr, though I could be wrong.

There's also Heart to Hart (or maybe Hart to Heart, I forget) Ambulance, and I think some of the hospitals in Baltimore have their own critical care ambulances.

Minus that, I'm not so good on the Western Shore ambulances, but there are probably a decent amount in the Baltimore/DC metro area.

Western shore companies include Butler, AAA, ProCare, and TransCare.

Like rescue1 said, they only do IFT. I would stay away from Butler and TransCare. Shady companies with poor reputations. I've had a few friends work for them and no one lasted long.

I don't know much about AAA. One of the girls I went to medic school with works for ProCare and seems to like it.

If you do get the chance to work for either UMMC or Johns Hopkins I would definitely take it. Very reputable critical care trucks. I believe they hire EMTs as drivers.

Let us know where in MD you are and I can point you in a better direction.

I'm 10 minutes south of Baltimore. I've heard from a few people that TransCare is an ok place to work and pay was fairly decent for an EMT, but that's the only company I've heard anything about. I plan on applying to as many places as possible. Just wanted to hear some opinions on different companies.

My dealings with TransCare have been limited to run ins with the crews at local ERs.

Most of them don't wear uniforms, some will wear the shirt but they wear it untucked. Some other winners I've seen usually wear either a coors light hat, or some volly tshirt. Combined with their attitudes it gives off a very poor image of the company.

It sounds like you're in the Anne Arundle area, you could also check out BWMC Or AAMC. Ive heard they hire EMTs as ER techs.

You can also look into Erickson Retirement Communities. They hire EMTs. You work as a Security Guard/EMT for a large assisted living community. They have a place up in Catonsville. If I remember right they are the highest pay for EMTs in the area with the exception of the local FDs.
