Should I take one this fall? I heard it helps to be a phlebotomist to make it easier get a job as an ER tech. Is this true? It costs 395 dollars. Is it worth it?

Don't know but I am contemplating the same thing.

In MA, (EMT-I) or (EMT-B with Phlebotomy) = ER Tech.

for $395 that is very cheap! The ones I can find over here are $1000.
You're probably better off getting an EMT-I. That way, you can still work in EMS out in the field as an Intermediate, if your state allows.

cool. I don't think I'll do the class this fall. Maybe next year. I want to see if I can get hired as a basic first.

Most phleb's I know of had OJT and never took a class, or were truly lab tech.'s ...

whats OJT?

The OJT is well on the way out. Stricter standards by JCAHO and Medical Errors committees at hospitals are being monitored.

We have had to jump through some serious hoops to get the blood draws from paramedics accepted. The paramedics did have to attend a training session by the hospital lab manager. They got off lucky. The lab Medical Director was pushing for a minimum of a 40 hour phlebotomy class and observed skills time in the clinic. It being discussed with the local paramedic training programs to include more phlebotomy training if the paramedics are going to be collecting specimens in their region.

A certified phlebotomy class definitely would be good. Not many Paramedic students or Paramedics will be able to say they stick 30 - 40 patients a day. You'll be intimate will every vein when it comes time to start IVs, although phlebotomy and IVs differ. Our lab technicians have helped out in the ER many times to locate a viable vein on a hard to stick patient.

Here's a good article from the Medical Lab Observer (not meant to discourage or frighten, just pointing out the reasons for certifications in the phlebotomy field);

Time will be scheduled with the instructor to do live sticks (usually scheduled within the 6 wks of class time). Students must complete 15-20 live sticks to successfully complete the course. This is the course description. I don't know if they offer the PBT exam or not. What do you think? If it's offered in partnership with the hospital, wouldn't you think they offer a cert?

it sounds better than the course I was looking at.
