It's good to have to knowledge and I wouldn't call it overkill; I'm glad I know what I do (and it's not much...my roommate is in nursing school and boy does her knowledge blow my mind, and she's not even halfway done yet).
In regards to NR, yeah not a lot of the stuff we learned wasn't even mentioned but you never know what your next call is going to be and you're going to be glad you learned how to care for like, a OB limb presentation (bad example, I got hit with a lot of OB on NR). Gotta remember that you've NEVER seen everything.
