I was wondering if anybody has any opinions of how the online basic course is. If you have taken it or currently taking it could you please give me some info? Thanks!

I didn't take it nor do I know anyone that has. I honestly don't see it as being very good because most everything you learn involves hands on. I agree online classes are good but not for EMS.

+1 I couldn't agree more.

EMT refreshers online or Continuing Education online is great! However, if it is someones first time taking the EMT course, I would not recommend that they take it online, simply because of what EMTTravis said, everything is hands on. With online, you just don't get the hands-on experience you need to be a successful EMT. Again, just my opinion.

All online classes I am aware of require you to still attend hands on classes. Some of the online programs are as good if not better than many regular classes if you are the right type of student. Many think it is a shortcut but they are usually the ones that sign up then drop when it is harder than they thought or they find out they are not self disciplined enough for a self paced course.

For the two above medic, do you think everyone learns best by being hands on?

I sure don't.

I'll admit I take a lot of online classes.. It is easier for me than attending class all the time. If someone can find a basic class that has hands on labs and such then ok I agree it might work. I just have never heard of one that is like that. Also I agree some may learn better by reading than hands on but you also have to agree that a lot of the stuff we learn in basic/medic class is hands on.. Atleast it was for me.

That's MOST if not all that I know of...

The majority of my EMT class was spent with the lights off flipping through power points and taking breaks. It may as well have been online. If there is an actual physical skills portion it may not be a bad idea.

Yeah, what's with the lights off thing anyway? Between srtudents begging for darkness (usually so they can sleep) and instructors who prefer to teach nocturnally, it's a wonder anyone learns at all! I turn off only those lights which must be dimmed in order to see a screen. More than 1 falling asleep? Make some noise and flip them babies on...time to do something else!

Haha yea. I think that is why we took breaks every half an hour or so. Our days were very productive and educationally stimulating  .

well im in a zero to hero class and we go 32 weeks and we have to be at the college for 20 weekends from 8 to 5 for sometimes only saturday and somtimes both sunday and saturday. We just finished out basic and from what I can see it is a good course. Our instructor makes us take section tests at the college so we cant really use google so i think that it is a great class actually

my basic class was a hybrid class, some was online and some was in the class. It required a lot of outside the class room studying, more than the normal class. We were required to read the chapter, go through the power points, and when we got to class it was a discussion on what we had learned (1.5 to 2 hours), and the rest of the class was hands on with "Patient/Student" contacts.. All the test were done in class also.

I liked this format. Our class was two days a week (4 hours each time) for 3 months. and there were weekends.

online courses take diligence to complete. Thus i have been in EMT-I class for almost 1 calendar year. Scheduling these clinicals is a B****. I'm done with my didactic, just have to finish these rideouts and take the nr.

If you can't stop yourself from having fun, online courses may not be for you!
