All of the services I am looking to apply to in three months (once I get my EMT-B) require at least one year of medical experience. I assume this is something that is very standard across the board, but is it 100% necessary to have?

Thanks!

There is no real yes or no answer. A lot will depend on your area and where you are trying to get hired (ER,IFT,911,etc).

Generally speaking ER jobs are very hard to get into because of pay and benefits. So the hiring process can be tough and require experience but not every ER is this way.

911 services usually like prior experience but often it is not needed.

IFT services usually have no issues hiring brand new EMTs.

I am really wanting to start with 911. I should have my HazMat Tech by the time I apply and hopefully some stronger connections with both of my "dream" services.

Connections will help you out a lot if you decide to use them. Once again it all depends on where your attempting to get hired on at.

Very true. Thanks for your imput. The county I live in has a high turn over rate compared to national standards for EMT-B, and the pay is around $10,000 less than a local county, but it is better than nothing. At least it is a good stepping stone.

Your best bet is to start with IFT. It gets you used to the equipment and driving an ambulance. It also allows you to learn a lot about patients, their conditions, and medications. It is a great way to practice with skills, assessment and vitals.

Many 911 jobs require experience, especially municipality ems vs private. The higher pay EMS jobs are almost impossible without experience. You might get lucky with privatized EMS.

IFT is not as bad as it seems.
