On those slow days, how do you pass the time?

Sleep, read, browse the internet. One of my partners who unfortunately only works one day a week keeps the day interesting. We'll hit up all the sporting good stores in the area as we're both into backpacking and similar. We'll use the time to get errands done and whatnot, it's surprising how much time looking at boots at the uniform store will kill.

There's a couple of us who will go to the gym if there's one near our post.

What, there is no hot chicks to be found near your station? None at the gas station, local restaurant or laundromat? :D
 
We will frequent Mission Bay at one of our posts. Lots of nice women down there. A lot of them jog, too.
 
I keep busy by cleaning the rig, making sure everything is stoked, paperwork is proper filled out and legible, O2 Levels adequate, and we have enough fuel.

Work first then fun.

After my "work" chores are done I like to hang out downtown Cannery Row (Monterey) and bs with cops and the ff's that are down there. Mellow days
 
When I worked overnights in ABQ we slept and hung our at the iHop in the center of town (lots of other crews and cops hung out there as well)
 
I think if i ever finally get hired somewhere, i would clean the rig, wipe everything down, make sure everything is in working order, supplies are stocked up, fuel, then i would do some cardio, get a bite to eat, study anything your not up to date on or struggle with, nap if i have time.
 
I usually just text my wife or walk around doing safety checks. Oh and people watch. That is pretty exciting when you work at a casino. Weirdos all over. I also like to watch the roulette table.

Most places have you do that before you put your rig into service. I'd like to think so, anyway.
 
On a quiet day I like to get some lunch, a fag break and try to leave on time.
 
Quiet days? What are these days of quiet of which you speak? I know not of them. We have a utilization rate of about 70% so quiet days are a rarity.

Catch up on schoolwork, read a newspaper, hang out with some other crews at a local cafe drinking coffee. Sometimes do some BLS and some ALS if we're lucky.

I wish I was on an agency like that. We're averaging 110 calls a month, and have 2-3 rigs on a day. I've only had three calls since getting out of my FTO. So much for experience.

I wish I was at an agency like that! We do anywhere from 200-400 calls a month. Per rig. My unit does around 350 a month.

If I had a dollar for every time I got a call right as I arrive and have to radio "show me enroute, document unchecked vehicle," .............

Sounds about right. People at busy services wish they were at slower services, and vice versa
 
assuming rig check has been done at the beginning of the shift....wash truck, go through restock supplies and check dates, see if anything needs ordered for the cabinet in station where we get our restock supplies, do outdates, clean station - sweep/mop/dust/etc., feel free to wash spare trucks, do rig checks/outdates on them, etc. decon truck.
find a couch and take a nap, watch tv, get on computer/facebook/etc, do con-ed, play with spare/training equipment/manniquins, etc.....

Wow, really? I could see some legal issues if a rig goes in service and is missing something required to be on it. Especially if it's needed during a call.

just out of curiousity, do you go OOS if you don't get to get one IV bag restocked? at every service i've worked at if the truck is lacking something the offgoing crew (who usually is still dropping off a pt) will tell the on-coming crew whats needed, or let them know nothing is needed, but we still have to document rigcheck forms, regardless of whether or not anything is needed. now if its a truck thats been sitting OOS and is being added to supplement current staffing....that's another story - get there early to check and make sure everything is there...
