Not counting small locals, I'm a pretty big fan of Smitty's in Lockhart

The Lockhart places can be inconsistent. If you want Lockhart BBQ without the tourist experience, you need to try Hays County BBQ in San Marcos.

I definitely need to try SM, then. That's only about 25min north of me- much closer than Lockhart.
