New Yorkers are in big trouble if seconds are the difference between life and death. Ambulance response times during life-threatening emergencies have skyrocketed, as the FDNY admits its having tro…
Average ambulance response time to life-threatening emergencies jumped more than 34 seconds from eight minutes and 14-seconds in the 2024 fiscal year to eight minutes and 48 seconds for the first quarter of the 2025 fiscal year running from July 1 through November, according to the mayor’s management report.
they went up 34 seconds... not exactly skyrocketing....
FDNY EMS is chronically underpaid, chronically understaffed, and half of the department is just on the ambulance until they can take the promotion exam to the suppression side of the department. They have had an EMT shortage for the past 25 years, because the city made a bunch of promises (most of which didn't occur), and continues to treat them like the redheaded ******* stepchild of FDNY.
The only people who think FDNY EMS is a good system, is people within FDNY EMS; the initial training they receive is top notch (or so I am told), but other than that, there is nothing good about the system, and most people are looking to leave when they get a better offer.
