CATSKILL, N.Y. (June 29) - Police say a New York man running to the aid of another motorist fell to his death from a bridge, apparently because he didn't know there was a large gap between lanes.

State police say 44-year-old Kevin Ryan, of Mount Kisco, was traveling on Route 23 in the town of Catskill, 30 miles south of Albany, around 10:45 p.m. Sunday when he noticed a vehicle overturned in the opposite lane.

Another argument to just keep on driving and call 911.

Investigators say Ryan stepped over a concrete barrier unaware there was a 17-foot wide gap between the eastbound and westbound lanes of the bridge

Ok... I get tunnel vision, but seriously? 17 feet? That's not like a 3 foot gap between wooden planks...

More like an argument to keep a close eye on where you're going, especially at night.

RIP, Good Samaritan.

Yeah, I think I'd have been wondering what was between me and the other lane, and why the barrier was there. This guy tried to help and died--talk about no good deed ever going unpunished.

Whoa!!!! Sounds like he got a dose of my luck.

Seriously RIP and thoughts to the family of someone trying to help another out.

DARWIN award contestant.

Do we not remember the old adage "Look Before You Leap"

Yeah, I understand it was night, but if there is a concrete barrier separating a highway on a bridge one would think you would look for the ground before jumping over.

It is great he wanted to help...BUT...LMAO...sorry but gotta laugh

Back before my time there was an MVC in my area and 2 cops did the same thing on one call. The gap here was only about 2 feet and they'd all done it hundreds of times just get close to the scene and if you're on the wrong side of the road hop the wall, well this time it didn't work out and 2 cops fell. 1 actually lived, the other happened to fall on the railroad tracks and a train came through before anyone could get there to help him. Sad story but another training opportunity to do it right and take the extra minute to go past and turn around get there safely.

Holy crap. if it was not bad enough that he fell then to get hit by a train.

I once heard a story from an old roommate of mine: this guy got hit by a car on an overpass of a major, busy street and he fell to highway below, where he got hit again. I believe he was alive when EMS arrived...It is one of those signs that you are having a bad day...that someone up there does not like you...that you urinated (wanted to use another word but don't want to offend) in someone wheaties

I don't really think I agree with you here. Are you saying that nobody should ever do a good deed where they could get hurt, and they should just call 911 instead? The guys intentions were clearly honorable.

What I'm saying is when you see an accident, stay in your car, call 911, and keep driving.
