NREMT and State cert

Here in California you only need to pass the NREMT once to get your county/state certification for EMT-B, or whatever the title is now. Once you get your state cert you no longer need to have the NREMT. Anyways, I have kept my county/state cert current but let my NREMT expire.
Now if I wanted to once again become nationally registered could I just challenge and retake the test? Just wondering.

Ya theres no point doing the NREMT if you don't plan to move to a state that requires it over your state cert.
