The problem appears to be with the Medtronic device, and would apply to any other device that utilizes the MagSafe technology. Where the IPhone comes into the equation is the magnet ring which centers the phone on the charger. The gauss field, magnetic flux from that configuration, is ideal for activation of various devices such as switches. Or in this case, deactivation.

If it isn't apparent in these articles, the deactivation isn't permanent. When the magnet is taken away from the ICD, it works again. The pacemaker function (most ICD's have this) is not inhibited at all.
