Hey, everyone! My name is Clay. Yup, I'm a newbie to this forum as well the EMS world. I just graduated about a year ago with my bachelor of science degree in business marketing. I've always had a passion to help people and make a difference. Currently, I'm working for a local school district as an instructional assistant for special needs children. Though I love working with children, my restlessness and heart wants to take me elsewhere. I've always been interested in the human body and health. For the longest time, I wanted to be a police officer, but I recently found my temperament wasn't for that career. A couple weeks ago, as I was driving around my town, I heard the sirens of an ambulance in the distance. It was then my mind started to ponder the life of an EMT/ Paramedic. I've always been amazed with people in this field. They are, no doubt, the super-heroes of the health care field. My hats are off to you guys serving proudly within the EMS realm. I've read a few threads sharing how the life of an EMT/Paramedic is not about money but about helping people and changing lives. Everyone loves money; that's a known fact. When it boils down to it, living with a purpose and changing lives is priceless. This fall I will be going through an EMT program. I'm very excited. I don't want to jump the gun or anything, but I honestly feel this is where I need to be. I look forward to reading your guy's threads and communicating. There seems to be plenty of experience and knowledge on here. I look forward to learning. Thanks to all those serving and helping people everyday.

Thank you jesusfreak :)

ahhh, my heart goes pitter patter when i hear a siren and a fire engine or rescue passes by my car at full speed sirens wailing <3.

the best thing you can do is try it out and see if its for you!. Its not all guts and glamour..sometimes is going into depressing places like nursing homes picking up grannies with pneumonia, or cancer... or its getting choked out by a psych patient.

theres a little bit of everything in EMS, so ive learned. But the best part like u said is helping others and making a difference :)

Welcome to the forums. And welcome to EMS too! Keep us posted on how things go with your entry into this strange world filled with even stranger people. :-)

@Pneumothorax: That seems to be another perk to an EMT/Paramedic job;meaning, the variability that comes with it. You never know what could take place on each call. Thanks for your insight.

@Lightsandsirens5: Thank you for the warm welcome. I look forward to sharing my journey here on the forums. Can't wait till it starts.

Always remember the O2 bottle is there for combative psych patients.

Provide high velocity oxygen therapy? That wasn't covered in my basic class... is that an ALS skin? Can a basic still assist by drawing up the bottle, but not connecting it to anything?

You know, i have been where you are now man, i remember when i was changing oil in the garage that i worked at, and then hearing the sirens go whining by, and thinking about whats going on. I would always say a prayer for that crew and their patient, that they be safe and they may save that patients life. I knew then that i wanted to be the person to bring some comfort and relief to the family and patient. After that i looked into it, especially knowing that money wasnt the greatest for us folk, but decided to make a goal and complete it. It feels great man, and i bet youd be a great fit for EMS

What?

Welcome to the site Clay, you'll find that there's a wealth of knowledge here, so feel free to jump into the discussions and ask questions. Good luck!

Only if the medic is too busy to draw up the O2 bottle himself. And it had to be documented correctly. Haha.

Welcome to EMTlife Clay.

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone. It's nice to see many people that can relate to me and my situation. I've enjoyed reading many threads already and I do plan on asking more questions and getting involved. There is also good humor on here lol. I'm loving it.

Yeah, humor seems like it would play a vital role in this field; a way to cope and love the job. I'll have to remember that lol.
