I feel like I am at wits end trying to land an EMT job in Central Kentucky. Agency after agency, hospitals included, have simply shut the door in my face because of my "lack" of experience. I can certainly understand why that is; however it is none the less frustrating. My only question, which I am sure has been asked before is, how does one go about getting experience when no agency out there; aside for the Military; will give you a chance.

are there volunteer agencies? Can you volunteer in the hospital?

No, I have already looked into that option and all of the agencies around here are paid. Hospitals won't let me volunteer either b/c of insurance liability. I guess Central KY is a perfect place to live in. *insert sarcasm* I honestly do not know where to go from here. Even once I am 21, it feels like there isn't any hope left.

Most hospitals have a volunteer section. It wont be as an EMT but it is a good wa to meet MDs and RNs and see about getting a pt care tech job.

Otherwise keep applying.

Central Kentucky? Unless you're in a city, there are likely volunteer fire departments with rescue squads near you... sure you wouldn't be working on a transporting rig (although around here many VFD's have their own BLS/ILS rigs) but it would be good experience for you.

Every state has volunteer fire departments in the rural areas, generally only cities are covered by career guys.

If somehow that isn't an option, then simply do more ride along time on a rig. Even though you aren't a student anymore, you can probably use your certification to get more ride time and gain some experience. I don't know what your state requires to be an EMT but here in NY we have to have 10 hours of ride time and ten hours of ER time to get certifed, so I know getting additional experience that way wouldn't be an issue here

Keep after them. Turning 21 will help your cause as well.

With no "real" EMS experience I got hired to a ALS 911 agency and I'm 22. I had alternate experience as a ski patroller and beach lifeguard at a large, busy beach but most of my other work experience was customer service oriented or supervisory roles. They loved the customer service experience. Despite what people think quite a bit of our job is customer service.

I really do appreciate ya'lls advice and I am doing my best to try and follow it; so far my luck has yet to change. Been placing calls to ambulance services around the Lexington area and so far no luck. Guess I'll just keep at it; wish me luck.

Well fingers and toes crossed I'll do well in my interview tomorrow w/ Rural Metro. Was wondering if anyone had any pointers?
