Hello everyone, Im the new guy on board! Just started my EMT-B training last week. I was wondering if anyone knows any emts/medic who have disabilities, since I was born with slight cerebral palsy. Some say its not very possible but I say to hell with that I am going to try my best to become a Medic! Im lucky to have a mild case since I just have a small limp and slightly weak hand on my left side.

I must say I commend you and it is a brave thing for you to try. I hope you succeed.

I second that. Good luck! Thats amazing. Proving to everyone that nothing is going to stop you is an amazing part of your character. Best of luck and keep us up dated on your EMT status and schooling.B)

How It All Works.Version4.69

Each of us comes into this world and begins to discover just how limited we are. Each of us is limited in different ways. For too many of us, we fight against those limitations, minimize or deny them. Once we stop all the fighting, and accept that we are limited, then the doors open up, we find ways to work with those limits, and to our surprise, we discover we're unlimited.

The best way to break barriers is surpass them, and you only have a "disability" if you let it weigh you down. Dont ever let someone tell you that you cant do things.:)

Thank you all for your kind support, I really mean it. It is true firetender, back then I just felt sorry for myself then I accepted how it is. After I did, I began to live life and see it aint so bad as there is more severe cases of cerebral palsy. I have never felt so happy and proud going to emt class everyday! Man, last week we had our first skills practice and I kept freezing up being a little nervous since it was my first time doing all that. Anyone else had that problem and had a good solution to control nerves?

Half my class has those same problems. I think the best way to keep cool is to remember that you are there to learn, and the first time you do any skill in class will probably not be the last time. If you have a good instructor, they aren't going to let you pass the class if they don't think you've mastered the material.

Also, in my state (I don't know how it is other places) most of the EMS services have you riding third chair (behind at least 1, and possibly 2 medics) during at least part of your probie period. They aren't expecting you to leave the class and immediately be the guy in charge on a truck (they do expect this after medic school). They expect you to have a solid foundation, to spend time memorizing your protocols, and to learn from others while you work.

I say this because I know some of the biggest problems people in my class are having is anxiety about being responsible for someone else's life. When they don't master the material immediately they get the idea that they are deficient and will be bad EMTs. I tell them to trust our instructor (he's really good), he will make us ready for most of what we will face as new EMTs, and the rest we'll learn along the way.

PS: Don't drink coffee or chug Mountain Dew if you can at all manage that. We have 9 hour class days, so you see these people wired in the morning, crashing before lunch, and then dead tired before the day is done. Eat a good breakfast if you can and stay hydrated (yup, hydration is the secret key to EMS success).

There's a guy where I work with the same thing - A smaller, weaker arm on one side. Similar to a T-rex, for those who are trying to visualize it.

I spoke to him about it one day, and he said that when he was hired, he went through the same orientation and lifting duties as anyone else. He can lift, he can drive, he can tech. He's currently in another Medic class (Days, I'm in Nights) and he can even intubate and start an IV and push drugs... He just had to find a different way to adapt to everything.

More power to you for not limiting your self!!

A tip for doing your skills practice, just do it over and over agian till you feel comfortable!! thats the only way your going to calm nerves is by having experince doing it over and over... as your teacher if you can practice your skills during Lunch, Break or off days..

i was nervous the first time too doing my skills, but after practicing over and over i feel really comfortable doing it

so take advantage of as much practice you can get!!

Good luck to you! and i hope you do very well in the field!!!!
