Hey, im really new to this and i start school in februrary. i live in NYC and it was basically this or be a nurse. i want to be a paramedic and save lifes...any advice for a newbie?

Don't make a decision based off "I want to save lives." Truly saving a life is not nearly as common as one may be lead to believe. EMS is a great line of work for a great many people, however it has it's disadvantages. I'd really do your homework before making a decision between nursing and medic, as both have their benefits and downfalls. Especially if your primary selling point is paramedics save lives (not saying that's your only reasoning).

For either one, get as much education as you can, never stop learning, and don't turn into a pompous :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored: ;)

LoL that's a censored word?!

Saving lives is a noble thing... however it's not something that happens very often in EMS or in Nursing. If that's the only reason you're getting into medicine, you're going to end up a really cranky provider because most of your patients won't need all the amazing stuff that you'll have available to keep them alive. You'll end up burnt out and thinking that all calls other than the Code 3 response with a Code 3 return to the ED are complete BS and a waste of your time and talent.

I, frankly, learned more doing interfacility calls than scene calls. Amazingly enough, often times I'd have picked up on something from those IFT patients only to have it show up later in a 911 call and be able to take a more appropriate action than just "I have no idea what this is so I'll transport and let someone else figure it out..."

of course theres more but I like the idea of the fast pace work...especially in nyc

Well, I wouldn't necessarily call it "fast-paced" but you can't get behind in your work or you hose the schedule...

My biggest fear is that i wont be able to remember all the information or something like that. how hard is it to retain all the infomation

I was one of those kids who slept through class but listened enough to get A's on the test

It's not all that hard to retain the info, if you use it on a regular basis or revisit that info regularly. Also, at least in my experience, the more you learn, the more you can learn. It's not going to be all that difficult to do as long as you do the work to read, listen, do the things you need... just do the work and you'll be fine. It's not difficult stuff, just a lot of it sometimes.

Paramedicine is a passion, you never stop learning in this field and retaining information is entirely dependant on the individual. If you work hard and take your studies seriously you wont have a problem. Lastly once you qualify dont stop reading and learning! Good Luck
