Not looking to get rich. I am finding a hard time on what a EMT starts out at? I just enrolled in college to get certified. Sat I get my CPR cert. Wife is a Nurse, I know I will probably never make as much as her, but was curious. I enjoy her stories, and want my own :)

Any feedback would be great.

Thanks

EMT's make very little.... after spending a little over 8 years with a FD as an EMT.. I was only making 11.15hr. Sad. Most other places arent much better.

Wow! Didn't think it was that low. Home Depot paid me $14.50hr to start. Paramedic pay better?

Most Paramedics (least on the East Coast) start out in City Departments around $40,000. Baltimore County starts at $45,000 yet Baltimore City only starts at $35,000.

What state are you in? That's the only way to figure out what your pay might be, and if it's good or not.

Here in north Texas, I started at $10.55 right out of school. While not great, it's not horrible either considering the low cost of living.

A guy in my medic class works as an EMT-B tech at a childrens hospital, and he makes $17.00 starting.

That's a little better. That's $23hr ($45000yr).

Hello,

I am in California.

What is the letters after EMT mean? New here, bare with me :)

Ah, well now that you put California:

Don't expect much as a Basic.

EMT-B = Emergency Medical Technician- Basic

FF/EMT = Firefighter / EMT

Gotcha. I assume more classes and better pay for ff/emt? Or just butter to take EMT class, then if I like it, go to the paramedic class? Sounds like better pay?

Sounds like EMT is $12hr as paramedic is $23hr. Kinda like a CNA is $12hr and LVN is $26hr?

I take it EMT is like a MA on pay?

Always continue on to paramedic. But only if you want to stay in the field, and work in medicine.

In California expect minimum wage if you can get job.

I just got a job in Riverside as an EMT and i know that the medics make around $45,000 to start. I think with raises it can go much higher

How much did you start at? If you don't want to post it, please PM it to me. :)

Thanks

And when you see say $40000 a year that includes overtime not just a 40 hour work week.

When I was working ambo several years ago we were told that we were told by the union that we were the second highest paid company in the state of CA. EMT starting was 12.86 when I started and 13.36 when I left, with a 4% raise every year. So, ya Home Depot is gonna pay more that pretty much any BLS Ambo gig...

13.36 times 42 hours a week, times 50 weeks... take out taxes and... do the math... ovrtime of at least 3 12 hour shifts a month were needed.

I think medic course with be next in line after this class goes well :)

The rates around the country are all about the same and yes you wil make substantially more as a medic.

I just found this out: In upstate New York the pay for EMT-B is 10.00 an hour (starting) and a paramedic (that I know) with 10 years experience is making 21.00 an hour (not including overtime). Cost of living is cheap here but taxes are out of control.
