I passed my NREMT, got my Ambulance cert, CPR card in hand (AHA) Medical examiner card too. I have a Bachelors and have a year of working as a physical therapy aid in my pocket, Passed college anatomy and physiology too! I'm not trying to make this intro sound as a boast, but more as a what next? I really want to just walk into each ambulance HQ and start going from there. I guess my main question is where do I start looking? I've been to AMR and Kings website but they don't really give much info. Would I have better luck just walking into each of their HQ's and seeing where it goes? Or going through their online process? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Did you get a gray state EMT card yet? You cannot get an EMT job without it. Although it is a state card, you get the card through your local EMS agency. Check out San Francisco EMS website.

After you obtain that gray card, you can start applying for ambulance jobs.

AMR would be my #1 choice. If I recall correct, the starting pay is $19.10/hour at AMR San Francisco.

You could try visiting the ambulance companies, but that is not very popular anymore thanks to the Internet. Most local ambulance companies won't let you do a ride along unless you are an EMT student from a contracted school. Most local ambulance companies will only take online application. HR for many of the local ambulance companies are swamped and do not appreciate phone calls, but e-mailing them might be okay.

When I first became an EMT in 2010, California had a bad reputation on the forum for having too many jobless EMTs with too few open positions.

Are you aware of what interfacility transport (IFT) is? You will most likely start off doing non emergency transports transferring patients from one facility to another eg taking someone from a skilled nursing facility to their dialysis appointment. Depending on the company, the pay can be near minimum wage. New EMTs rarely go straight into 911; It can be years before you start doing 911.

I appreciate the reply, I am officially certified, I paid the money got everything done (nationally registered). I just want to figure out how other people got jobs after all the certifications . I just want to hear peoples experiences getting jobs and how they got them.

e; I see the links you sent and I love the response you gave. I guess my call out is more just personal experience, what the easiest way to get a foot in the door is..

National Registry =/= State Certification. If you have not applied through your Local EMS Agency for your grey state card yet, you are NOT certified as an EMT in California yet, and cannot get an EMT job without your State card.

But once you have that done, pretty much everyone will want you to apply online. Every EMT job I've had or interviewed for started with the online application. There were a couple that wanted me to fill out the app online, then print it out and submit it in person...but those are the exception not the rule (and one of them, my current job, just changed so it's like everyone else, 100% online, no more printing off to drop off in person).

You need to be nationally registered to get your State Card.
You need your State Card to work in CA.

Bookmark the hiring pages for AMR (SF and San Mateo) and King American and check them every week; jobs will pop up and disappear with little or no notice.
Also, check out Paramedics Plus (Alameda County).... They have been doing a lot of hiring as of late.
That said, each of these will require good communication to be successful.

AMR Sutter Division is hiring EMT's for IFT and CCT. They operate out of San Francisco county as well as all around the bay area and central valley. I'll be down in the city monday for my first scheduled shift with an FTO since Sonoma isn't in operation yet. Check out AMR Sutter, they're hiring EMT's, like Mr. Aprz said above.
